Why you should order a cheesecrack on your next snack adventure

Eke Bosman, better known as Instagram phenomenon @snackspert, ate his first frikandel as a baby, hates vlammetjes, has devoured at least 1,500 burgers in his lifetime, suspects that there is more mayonnaise in his body than blood, AND shares his best and worst snack reviews on FavorFlav. This week, Snackspert gave almost the full 5 stars (just half a point short) to all the snacks he tried; a first.

Deep-fried oyster mushroom bao bun from Nobu, Amsterdam

Could this be THE snack of the moment? A snack you HAVE to eat this year, because otherwise I’m not angry, just disappointed? Maybe. Sometimes a review can’t wait; sometimes you know immediately after eating it: this review needs to go online as soon as possible, because the sooner more people can visit this place, the better. Nobu in Amsterdam, a little spot that used to be a pop-up but finally has its own place on Herenstraat in the centre of our capital, is the new must-visit hotspot. No joke. And then, especially good news for all the vegetarians among us, there’s the deep-fried oyster mushroom bao bun. Holy moly. You know those steamed buns, right? But deep-fried: absolutely fantastic. So soft, so sweet, and combined with an excellent piece of oyster mushroom. But what really finishes it off are the various little finishing touches that make it not complete, no, MORE than complete. A spicy honey-butter sauce, with some sriracha for a sharp kick, mayo for the creamy element, and then a pickle for acidity, while you can decide how spicy you want it with the chilli oil. Don’t worry, they’ll ask you. Well, then you simply have a perfect bun. Yes, the price is definitely high, but this one is something else, people, my goodness. Already looking forward to their other buns. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

HEMA Hotdog

Why isn’t the HEMA hotdog a piece of cultural heritage yet? Yeeeeears ago I reviewed this one and gave it the richly deserved 5 stars, but in 2022 you’d think there would by now be better snacks from well-known Dutch establishments. Nope: the HEMA hotdog remains unmatched—the mustard sauce is iconic, the bun is sturdy yet soft, as if you’re lying on an Auping bed. And the sausage: perfect in its simplicity. For my old and new followers, this is an annual reminder: make sure you get a HEMA hotdog at least once a month. Thank me later. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Cheesecrack from Cafetaria ‘t Eefje, Amsterdam

Some time ago, I wrote about the cheesecrack in @HetParool. A cheese soufflé in the shape of a kipcorn, but tastier. Because: real cheese. These delicious snack sticks consist of both Emmental and aged Gouda cheese, creating a full-on party in your mouth as soon as you put one in there. But jokes aside, the cheesecrack is underrated. You can find it almost nowhere. And that’s a shame, but perhaps it’s simply up to us to make it more popular. Want to try the cheesecrack for yourself? Just open the Thuisbezorgd app, type in ‘cheesecrack’ or ‘cheese crack’ and voilà, the app will show you which snack bars do have it. I got mine at Cafetaria ‘t Eefje, where it was deep-fried excellently. The crispy coating could be a little more refined, in my opinion, but apart from that it’s a top-notch snack. Heavenly. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ ½
