Why You Should Start Eating Your Chips with Turkish Yogurt

It’s Friday and it’s raining. In other words: you have an excellent reason to sit on the sofa with a bag of chips and watch Netflix tonight. But if you do, do me a favor and dip your chips in Turkish yogurt. I’m telling you: this is going to be your new favorite (party) snack.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned from my Turkish in-laws over the past 4 years, it’s that you can eat everything with yogurt. Lamb? Yogurt. Bulgur? Yogurt. Soup? Yogurt. Vegetables? Yogurt. Fruit? Yogurt. The lempers I made for the family weekend? Just kidding, thankfully the yogurt stayed well away from those.
Add a little tub
But chips? Chips are impossible without yogurt. And admittedly, neither am I anymore. Because although I initially looked at my boyfriend mockingly when he dipped his bolognese chips into one of those tubs of Turkish yogurt (Greek is out of the question), I now routinely buy exactly such a tub along with the chips.
Full and creamy
The salt and crunch of the chips go perfectly with the freshness and creaminess of the yogurt. Or, to put it in Turkish: yoğurt. The one from Zaanse Hoeve is fine, but if you want the real deal, it’s best to stop by a Turkish grocery store, where they have countless varieties (once again: Turks take their yogurt seriously): thick, thin, sour, creamy.
If you really want to go all out, you can of course also mix in some olive oil, or grated cucumber and garlic, or a little lemon juice. But my favorite? Just the full-fat, thick, creamy yogurt and paprika chips. Give it a quick stir and start dipping!
