Why You’re Better Off Not Buying Italian Silver Ice Cream Coupes in the Netherlands
Silver—or rather, stainless-steel ice cream coupes are so hip that they have almost already outgrown the term hip. A few years ago, there was a real rush for vintage Italian ice cream coupes, complete with a foot and stem. If you want to buy them in the Netherlands, you’ll usually pay around twenty euros each, or even more. So here’s a secret tip: if you happen to be going on holiday to Italy this summer, wait and buy them there.
Vintage Italian ice cream coupes
Let’s be honest, they are lovely, these coppe di gelato. If you’re hosting a dinner at home, these Italian ice cream coupes look wonderfully festive when you serve ice cream (or something else) in them. You can also use them to serve butter, olives, taralli or other snacks. So it’s hardly surprising that they’re so sought-after. If you manage to get your hands on a few, the ice cream coupes usually begin a second life in your home. Around the 1980s, these ice cream coupes appeared everywhere in Italy. And not only in Italy, incidentally: in France too, they were indispensable in many households’ tableware collections. So when you buy them now, they’re usually vintage and have already had an entire career serving ice cream.
Buying a stainless-steel ice cream coupe
This may not surprise you, but in Italy the much-hyped ice cream coupes are not hip at all right now. They often just sit gathering dust in the crockery cupboard. That’s why it’s hardly surprising that, when you visit a second-hand shop or flea market in Italy, there’s a very good chance you’ll come across these ice cream coupes. The average price in Italy is about ten times lower than in the Netherlands: you’ll pay around two euros each, or sometimes even less. Your best chance of finding them (this cheaply) is in southern Italy; somehow, the silver ice cream coupe trend caught on a little more successfully there than in the north.
