This new, enormous food hall is the reason we now want to go to Barcelona
As if there aren’t already a thousand reasons to plan a city trip to Barcelona as soon as possible: today, you get one more. Time Out Market Barcelona has recently opened, a gigantic food hall near the city’s old harbour. A true foodie paradise in one of Europe’s very best cities.
Does the name ‘Time Out Market’ ring a bell? It might. There are also locations in Lisbon, Porto, New York, Cape Town and Dubai, among others. Time Out Market is a concept by online magazine Time Out. The magazine regularly creates lists and guides such as ‘Best restaurants in Barcelona’. With the covered markets, they want to bring those lists to life. So you can visit a covered food hall featuring smaller versions of the city’s most famous and popular food spots.
Make it a full day
If you’re going to Barcelona soon, you’d better add another day to your city trip. At Time Out Market Barcelona, you can easily spend an entire day. The covered food hall is more than 5,000 square metres in size! There are 14 kitchens, four bars and a full-service restaurant to visit. There’s also a stage with spectacular performances, from DJ gigs to drag shows. Community tables are set up everywhere, where you’re free to join in and enjoy a drink. Yes, you can easily keep yourself entertained here for a while, I’d say.
14 kitchens, local and global
Back to the kitchens. Time Out Market brings together the crème de la crème of Barcelona’s culinary scene . There are 14 different varieties, and the range couldn’t be greater. You can pick up dishes from Michelin-starred chefs, as well as street food made with local ingredients. Choose local tapas or take a complete culinary journey around the world. Pizza, burgers, tacos and sushi are all available.
Just to mention a few names: for example, you can taste dishes by Catalan star chef Fran López. He heads the kitchen at Michelin-starred restaurant Xerta in Barcelona. If you want to try his creations, visiting Time Out Market is your ultimate opportunity. Another Barcelona hotspot you’ll find in the food hall: La Balsemina. Famous names
Quench your thirst at one of the food hall’s four bars. Two are indoors and two are outside. From the terraces on the outdoor deck, you have a 360-degree view of the harbour, sea and city. Not bad. Top tip: you’ll also find a Paradiso bar here. Do you remember that this bar in Barcelona was named the best cocktail bar in the world in 2022? From the Paradiso bar at Time Out, you can look out over the famous Barri Gòtic.
Even better: Time Out Market keeps Spanish hours. It opens every day at 10:00 a.m., and the restaurants don’t close their doors until midnight. The bars (including Paradiso!) don’t turn off the lights until 1:00 a.m.
