Why You’re Better Off Not Choosing Bags of Small Carrots

Baby wortels

Mini carrots (also known as baby carrots or snack carrots) seem like the ideal healthy snack. Yes, they certainly are healthy. But are they also the best choice in the enormous carrot landscape you find at the supermarket? No. In this case, winter carrots and bunch carrots are for the win. I’ll tell you why.

Aside from the fact that a bunch of large carrots is simply much sexier than small carrots, there are more reasons why you’d be better off leaving bags of mini carrots on the shelf from now on.

They aren’t at their best for very long

In terms of texture and taste, mini carrots from plastic bags are nowhere near as good as winter carrots or bunch carrots. If you don’t eat them quickly enough, they turn into one wet, soggy mess. Or they dry out much too quickly, developing a nasty white coating. In the latter case, they have lost too much moisture. Both situations probably occur because small carrots are cut from larger carrots. That’s why it doesn’t happen as quickly with winter carrots and bunch carrots. At least, I’ve never had a wet, soggy carrot in my hand. Luckily.

They’re more expensive than their big brothers

A little comparison at Albert Heijn and Jumbo shows that those small, peeled carrots really are considerably more expensive than their big brothers: winter carrots and bunch carrots. At Albert Heijn, you pay €1 for a 300-gram bag of peeled small carrots. A one-kilo bunch of winter carrots costs just €1.75, and a bunch of bunch carrots costs €1.69. At Jumbo, you pay 0.95 cents for a 300-gram bag of peeled mini carrots. A bunch of winter carrots and bunch carrots costs the same as at Albert Heijn: €1.75 and €1.69 respectively.

Where does that price difference come from? Probably because the small carrots have already been peeled. Well… You can easily peel them yourself in a few minutes. With this hack, you can even do it faster than the speed of light.

So go for bunch carrots or winter carrots. Which one should you use when? Bunch carrots are a little fresher, while winter carrots are a little sweeter. That’s why bunch carrots work well in salads, and winter carrots in stews and soups.
