Thirsty tales

Will Jun become the new hipster drink?

kombucha jun zelf maken

Do you know kombucha? This fermented drink has been gaining popularity for a while because it is said to have health-promoting properties. Not everyone is a fan, but if you’re looking for a slightly fizzy drink that isn’t necessarily super sweet, Jun might just be something for you.

Like kombucha, Jun is also a fermented drink, but it is made with green tea and honey instead of black tea and sugar. There are a few other differences too, and it might well be the next new alcohol-free drink to become hipper than hip.

Low/no

Homemade kombucha isn’t completely alcohol-free, by the way, and neither is homemade Jun. The fermentation process produces natural alcohol, but you’d have to hang pretty heavily from the kombucha tap to get drunk from it. Many of the kombuchas currently marketed commercially, such as Butcha from, among others, Samuel Levie, do contain less than 0.5% alcohol. With a little goodwill, they can still be considered an alternative to soft drinks.

Subtle flavor

And the taste? Jun is said to have a more delicate and subtle flavor than kombucha, which some people find tastes a little like vinegar. Sweeter, softer notes from the honey, and in terms of mouthfeel, a little more fizz than kombucha.

Curious, and up for an experiment? Then check out this video about brewing Jun at home. Hipster beard or man bun optional ?
