Sometimes you read something early in the morning that makes you think you’re still dreaming or that you haven’t read it properly. But it’s really true: an animal welfare organization in the Polish city of Krakow had to respond this week after a woman was terrified of a strange creature in her tree, which turned out to be… a croissant.

‘Come and get it!’ Desperation can be heard in the woman’s voice.
‘But who, ma’am?’
‘That creature! It’s been sitting in a tree opposite the apartment block for two days! People won’t open their windows because they’re afraid it will come into their homes!’
‘But what is it, ma’am? Maybe an injured bird of prey?’
‘No! It’s not a bird!’
‘What does it look like?’ I ask, because I would like to know what I can expect.
‘It’s brown, and it’s sitting in a tree.’ It wasn’t just the woman who was panicking; several residents living near the tree were also keeping their windows firmly shut, afraid that the creature might fly inside, the woman on the other end of the line explains, becoming increasingly hysterical.

Help, an iguana!

It must have been a high-quality croissant, or at least one that can take a beating, because the thing had already been dangling in the tree for two or three days before the rescue team arrived. At first, they think it’s a bird or an injured animal. The frightened woman herself thinks it’s an iguana.

Once on site, they discover that it is a croissant, probably thrown outside to feed animals. Fortunately, everyone can have a good laugh about it. All’s well that ends well!
