World Food Day in Ede

world food day

On World Food Day, major food-related issues are highlighted in more than 150 countries around the world. How do we ensure that people do not go hungry? How can we consume in the most sustainable way possible? What impact does our food have on our health?

In the Netherlands, World Food Day is ‘celebrated’ in a light-hearted way in Ede. The event takes place there at the Mauritskazerne on 14 October 2017. There are supermarket safaris, and you can watch remarkable clips from De Keuringsdienst van Waarde together with presenter Marijn Frank herself.

History

World Food Day was established by the UN in 1979. The United Nations wanted to highlight the problems surrounding hunger and thereby create greater food security in the world. The topic is still relevant: four countries are currently experiencing famine.

Events

In Ede, you will learn all about our food system on 14 October during excursions, workshops and debates, or while slouching back with a drink in your hand and watching a food documentary.

Supermarket safari
One of the excursions is the supermarket safari. How do you shop responsibly? Should you buy organic cucumbers or not? What if the organic variety comes in plastic and the ‘regular’ one does not? Is it better to buy fair-trade products from faraway places, or local products from nearby? You will know after a trip to the supermarket with sustainability expert David Klingen. The safaris start at 11:00, 13:00, 15:00 and 17:00.

Vegetable masterclass
Take a masterclass with chef Jonathan Karpathios. During this workshop, he will teach you how to make a restaurant-worthy dish with vegetables as the star.

Strange fish
During this workshop, you will learn what else you can eat from the sea besides salmon, tuna, tilapia and other standard fish. After the lesson on bycatch, you will also learn how to fillet and prepare strange fish.

Health myths unravelled
Join food bloggers and scientists in discussing the influence of health claims made online. Discuss food as religion, fit girls and shakes, and the influence of the media on food myths.

De Keuringsdienst van Waarde
Watch the most remarkable clips from this programme and get a glimpse behind the scenes.

World Food Day 2017 takes place on Saturday 14 October at the Mauritskazerne in Ede. The event is largely free. Workshops and excursions cost €5. Check the website for more information.
