Wow: Big Mac prices vary so much
As if life weren’t expensive enough already… In recent years, McDonald’s has also seen a significant increase in prices. The days when a Big Mac cost less than four euros are well and truly a thing of the past, although in some places you can still get somewhat close. Crazy: the prices of Maccie’s flagship product are really worlds apart.
That was investigated by Volkskrant, and the results are quite remarkable. Spoiler: the Netherlands comes off extremely badly.
Off to Portugal
Because there, a Big Mac Menu costs just 7 euros — those are more or less the prices I still remember from back in the day. In the Netherlands, it now costs almost twice as much: 13.30 euros for a menu, putting us in second place. Only Switzerland ranks above us, where a menu costs 14.25 euros. What surprised me was that the price in the United Kingdom is still pretty reasonable: 8.04 for a Big Mac menu, just slightly more than in Slovakia. I had expected them to be more expensive, so that’s another pleasant surprise.

Big differences in the Netherlands
But even within our country, the differences are far from negligible, according to Volkskrant’s research. And I found these results even more surprising than the ones above, because Enschede turned out to be the most expensive city. What?! I really didn’t see that coming; a Big Mac menu costs 15.05 euros there. Seriously?! No, then we’d better go to Rotterdam, because there they cost ‘only’ 9.75 euros, making them the cheapest in the Netherlands. How can there be a difference of almost six euros? You’d think McDonald’s would have rules about this here, and that you couldn’t just make up your own prices, right? McDonald’s, I need answers from you.
