Wow, the self-checkouts at Albert Heijn can’t be trusted

Generally speaking, I really think the arrival of self-checkouts is a godsend. Because I can be rather dreamy, sometimes have a resting bitch face (when my head isn’t in the game; always) and therefore prefer to have as little contact with other people as possible. Of course, I know the risk: you may be checked. I have no problem with that. Until recently, that is.

When I had two bottles of wine with my groceries and the incredibly grumpy Albert Heijn employee asked me for my ID. Me, the 33-year-old. Fine, I didn’t have it with me (you’re not required to carry it once you’re over 26 either), so I didn’t get my bottle of wine, I was grumpy, she already was — it was an irritating moment. But I’m clearly not the only one who can get worked up about certain things at Albert Heijn.
Hey, Albert Heijn, how do you think things are going yourselves?
Martijn is airing his grievances on TikTok and I have to say: I completely understand his frustration. It’s a somewhat long TikTok, so I’d recommend watching and/or listening to the whole thing, buuuut I’m not the most difficult person either: I’ll briefly explain what the problem is.
This Martijn is a loyal Albert Heijn customer, and even has a (premium) personalized Bonus Card. Like so many of us, by the way. Very handy, right? You get discounts on products selected especially for you. Win-win, I would say. Well, apparently not: the self-checkout doesn’t apply that personalized bonus discount — and Albert Heijn is simply aware of this! But they decide not to do anything about it, effectively passing the problem on to us; the only way to get that discount after all is to ask for the difference back at the service desk.
No, Albert Heijn, this clearly isn’t going well
But seriously — how many people actually still go to that service desk, and how many think, ‘oh well, just leave those twenty cents’? I’d bet a lot of money that the latter group is much, much larger. And so Albert Heijn gets lucky again — we buy products without a discount. And this happened to Martijn when he happened to pay attention to it one time. How often has this already happened? The bonus wasn’t applied and you didn’t notice? Hellooo Albert Heijn, could you please fix this?!
