Drama: inflation is also hitting supermarket pizzas (and not by a small amount either)
People, inflation has now hit us very, very deeply in our souls. Pizzas are also part of this insane crisis. We’re paying a whopping 17% more for our favorite Italian meal than we did the year before. Se-ven-teen-per-cent. That’s enough to cry into your pizza hat (one of the things we obviously have at home as pizza lovers).
Mind you, this concerns supermarket pizzas. The pizzas you can order from your favorite Italian restaurant were not included in the study by the European statistics office Eurostat. But just assume that you’re also paying more for your pizza there. The hospitality industry has a major blow to deal with because of inflation, so they can hardly avoid raising their prices.
An above-average pizza price increase
What’s even worse is that, at 17%, we’re still above the average price increase in the rest of the EU. On average, the price of a pizza in Europe has risen by 16%. I know, a 1% difference isn’t much. But the fact that there are European countries that are well below this average makes me almost consider emigrating. To Luxembourg, for example, where the price increase is ‘only’ 7%. Hungary is definitely not the place to be if you still want to eat pizza at an affordable price. There, you pay a whopping 46% more for your pizza. Poor Hungarians – although they’re not in the top 10 of countries hit hardest by food inflation.
Painful situations caused by inflation
If you compare the 17% price increase with that of the previous year, the difference is enormous. Back then, we paid only 2% more for our pizza than we had the year before. Of course, that’s not very surprising. Over the past year, extreme inflation has meant that we’ve paid considerably more for everything than we did in the years before. Sometimes, that takes on very painful forms in the supermarket. Almost embarrassing, even.
Pizza love forever
Higher price or not, we’ll keep enjoying our favorite pizzas. Whether we buy them at the supermarket (have you tried the new Dr. Oetker La mia pinsa yet?), order them from our favorite chain or go to our favorite pizzeria. Or make them ourselves, of course.
