WTF is milkshake beer? We put it to the test…
If your motto is ‘act normal, that’s crazy enough’, don’t read on. Jopenbier is coming out with something crazy. Is their new “Life’s a Peach” Milkshake IPA brilliant or ridiculous? I put it to the test.

Life’s a Peach IPA from Jopen contains 6% alcohol and comes in a colourful pink bottle. The name Life’s a Peach is also a positive twist on the expression “Life’s a Bitch” these days (which, let’s be honest, applies to most people more right now) – and this bottle radiates nothing but bubbly happiness. I have to be honest: it doesn’t really appeal to me. When I drink beer – which is often – I like to drink ‘normal’ beer. Old and familiar, a nice lager. Sometimes I branch out to a Texels Skuumkoppe or a wheat or blonde beer, but that’s about it for me. I’m not necessarily a fan of an Indian Pale Ale either… That high hop content and bitter aftertaste are not for me. You can hear it already; I’m the ideal person to taste this!
Milk in your beer, pretty tasty
As soon as you open the bottle, a fruity aroma enters your nose. When pouring it, the cloudy golden-yellow colour is lovely to see. The flavour is, for me as a non-IPA fan, actually quite tasty. The sweet fruitiness is a fine counterpoint to the bitter IPA flavour I generally don’t like.
The beer’s texture is pleasant. It seems a little more syrupy and thicker. And yes, perhaps that’s because there’s milk in the beer. And no, this isn’t an article about bizarre drink combinations, the ingredients list makes it perfectly clear: lactose.
Milkshake IPA the new normal?
What’s the deal? I’ve been living under a rock of ‘simple’ lager. Not only does Jopenbier bring all the boys to the yard, other breweries have also started shaking bitter blonde IPAs with lactose and fruit. This first happened around four years ago, by the Swedish brewery Omnipollo. Since then, many breweries have followed suit.
A positive development? Well. If people like it, that’s obviously great, but other beers make me happier. How far can you go? When is beer still beer, and when does it become a tropical fruit drink? With this IPA, Jopenbier is certainly pushing the boundaries. Don’t really like beer? But do you like sweet, fruity drinks with a bitter note, and do you enjoy drinking them through a straw?
