You Are What You Eat: The Fridges of 14 Families Around the World Prove It

You are what you eat—there’s a reason that saying exists. German photographer and foodie Sandra Junker wanted to put it to the test, so she photographed fridges and their owners all over the world.

Open your own fridge sometime. How much does it say about you? Admittedly, in my case, surprisingly much. Always in stock: Turkish yogurt, cucumber, eggplant and olives. Oh, and wine. Depending on the day of the week and the time you look in our fridge. Preferably red, and yes: preferably chilled.
Not stereotypical
It’s not much different for the people Sandra photographed. Since 2012, people from London, Cape Town, Istanbul, Madrid, Paris and Berlin have opened their fridges to the photographer. Now you might immediately think in very stereotypical terms: bacon in London, butter in Paris, chorizo in Madrid and beer in Berlin, but no. It’s much more nuanced and personal than that.
Because regardless of where you live and your culture, your age, housemates, religion and social status naturally also influence your eating habits. Take a look:

Also fun: quite apart from your eating habits, your fridge naturally says a lot about how tidy and clean you are. Whether you spend a lot of time at home or not. And whether you like to cook or not. Open your fridge sometime—what does it say about you?
