You shouldn’t put up with anyone telling you to leave potatoes off your plate

We’re sometimes surprised by people who think potatoes are boring. Sure, a bland, overcooked, floury potato from a puddle of unsalted water – there’s really nothing exciting about that. But a perfectly cooked potato, seasoned just right, with your knife gliding through it perfectly, accompanied by something delicious on your plate and a good sauce or gravy: that’s comfort food at its finest, isn’t it?! Not to mention golden-brown, crispy potatoes from the oven!

We certainly wouldn’t say no to that. And that scare story about potatoes making you fat? Nonsense, says this expert:
Out of the doghouse
On Nu.nl, dietitian Karin Hoenderdos says it’s completely bizarre that people see potatoes as fattening. “If you have a normal eating pattern in which the potato is part of a healthy diet, it’s actually very nutritious for your body and doesn’t deserve to be put in the doghouse, unless you turn it into crisps or fries,” she says. Potatoes also contain vitamins B6 and C (although not in huge quantities, but still).
Music to our ears
Now that’s what we want to hear. According to Hoenderdos, those notorious carbohydrates aren’t so bad either; grains such as brown rice, quinoa or pasta contain more of them, she says. If you simply combat potatoes’ dreary boiled-vegetable image with a genuinely delicious preparation, you can easily put a meal on the table that makes everyone happy.
Power to the spud
Luckily, there are plenty of ways to make potatoes shine: boil them until perfectly tender in salted water and then generously douse them in sauce or gravy, or use various tricks to roast them deliciously crispy in the oven. We recommend that everyone practise their skills with this basic ingredient, because it can truly win hearts. Spud love forever!
