You’ll Want to Know This New Food & Wine Bar in Rotterdam: Square ’47
Rotterdam has gained a new food & wine bar: Square ’47. This is the new hotspot you’ll want to know, whether you’re looking to catch up with friends, enjoy a romantic dinner, celebrate your birthday or have drinks with colleagues.
Square ’47 is centrally located in Rotterdam: on Schouwburgplein. You can roll straight from the cinema (Pathé is a 3-minute walk away) or the shopping street into the restaurant, ready for a good drink (choose from more than 100 different wines, for example), a tasty lunch or an extensive dinner. Even if the film ends late, or you have late night munchies, you can come here for a bite: the kitchen is open until midnight. That’s exactly what sets Square ’47 apart from other restaurants—where else can you still order dishes from the menu after 10 p.m. these days?
Contemporary dishes to lick your fingers over
What comes out of Square ’47’s (late-night) kitchen is incredibly good. From the crispy chicken karaage (so tender and yes, also so crispy) to the brioche McFoie with steak tartare and fried foie gras (the chef’s speciality—my goodness, this is delicious). You can taste the quality of the fresh ingredients and that chef Illy Vroomen knows what he’s doing.
I rarely eat such a creamy bisque made with Dutch shrimp. Not to mention the dessert: a homemade Ferrero Rocher, an ode to the world-famous chocolate treat. Breaking open the chocolate shell enriched with hazelnuts is a fun gimmick, but what you then put in your mouth is a truly delightful experience.

Square ’47 consists of two atmospherically decorated floors. Dark green and orange-red/rust brown are the colours that create a warm whole. The upper floor is perfect for private lunches and dinners, and that’s exactly what you can hire this section for. You’ll also find a rooftop terrace here. When the weather is nice, you can also sit on the spacious terrace at the front of the restaurant.
At the helm: business duo Arnold van Strien and Alex Wolf
Owners Arnold van Strien and Alex Wolf are both experienced hospitality entrepreneurs. Arnold has been doing a lot for the hospitality industry in Breda for years: he opened a party café and a combined events venue and restaurant in the city, is involved in various Breda projects and plays a major role in representing the interests of Breda’s hospitality entrepreneurs. Alex established tapas restaurant Lust and bistro Bonheur by Lust in Barendrecht.
Wines from around the world
The wine list takes you across (almost) the entire world. You’ll find well-known producers as well as gems from unfamiliar wineries. Both experienced and less seasoned drinkers can find bubbles, rosés, white and red wines and dessert wines here in every price range.
Open 7 days a week
You can visit Square ’47 7 days a week between 9 a.m. and 1 a.m. The kitchen opens at noon. The restaurant is easy to reach: there are parking garages nearby and it’s just under a 10-minute walk from Rotterdam Central Station. Don’t be confused by the number 47: it isn’t the street number, but the year in which Schouwburgplein was established. You’ll find Square ’47 at number 286, on Karel Doormanstraat at Schouwburgplein.
