You’ll want to make this: cheese and onion chips with just 2 ingredients

Ui-kaashack

We mainly know onions as a flavour enhancer in dishes. In French onion soup, they’re the star, but otherwise we use onions — usually together with garlic — as a staple ingredient in the kitchen. Until today. We discovered an onion recipe for cheese and onion chips that you’ll want to make immediately — they’re that delicious.

There’s no potato in them, because the onion takes centre stage in these chips.

The cheese and onion chips going viral

A hack is going viral on TikTok and Instagram that transforms your onion into the tastiest chips you’ve ever tried. Now I hear you thinking: onions aren’t remotely crispy, are they? They just go soft when you heat them, right? Correct. But I just told you there’s a second ingredient in this hack. And it’s something that makes us all happy: cheese! Of course, you can make grated cheese crunchy by putting it in the oven. That’s exactly what happens with this cheese and onion chip hack.

Why everyone is going so crazy for this hack is simple: cheese and onion are flavours that just work well together. It’s not for nothing that cheese and onion chips were invented long ago. The recipe is also incredibly easy, and you only need two ingredients. You undoubtedly have plenty of onions at home (unless you never cook with flavour enhancers, that is), and perhaps cheese too. And if not, that’s the only thing you still need to pick up at the supermarket.

How to make cheese and onion chips with just 2 ingredients

1. Preheat your oven to 200°C and line a baking tray with parchment paper.
2. Cut a large onion into thin rings using a mandoline or knife. (Here’s how to cut onions without crying!)
3. Sprinkle a generous amount of Parmesan cheese onto the baking tray and place the onion rings on top. If you want to jazz them up with the tips below, now’s the time. Brush the onions with olive oil and add herbs of your choice.
4. Bake them for about 20 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown and crispy.
5. Let them cool for a few minutes, then cut them into bite-sized pieces with a knife or pizza cutter.

Of course, you can jazz up the snack however you like. Take a look at which herbs are still in your spice drawer. Smoked paprika, perhaps? Cayenne pepper, if you like a bit of heat? You can also give your onion and cheese chips a sweet twist. A pinch of brown sugar works wonders. And naturally, you can use a different cheese too.
