Yum: how to make a delicious winter Sangria

sangria winter

We love enjoying a jug of Sangria on a sunny terrace on the Spanish Costa. But we’re not going to wait for the sun to come out again. We’re simply turning the summery drink into a winter version. One that might be just as delicious!

Sangria is one of the easiest drinks you can make. You get a bottle of red wine, some orange-flavored soda (or sparkling water), fresh fruit and plenty of ice cubes. A true classic sangria also calls for a splash of a strong liqueur. Such as orange liqueur or Cognac. We’re adding the latter to this winter Sangria too, which becomes extra delicious thanks to the various winter spices.

How to make a delicious winter Sangria

  • Put the sugar and water in a saucepan together with the spices. Bring to a boil, turn the heat down low and let it simmer gently for 3 minutes until it thickens slightly.
  • Let the syrup cool for 10 minutes.
  • Strain the syrup, but keep the cinnamon stick. You don’t need to keep the other spices.
  • Pour the wine into a large jug.
  • Juice two oranges and add the juice to the wine, along with the Cognac and spiced syrup.
  • Cut the other orange, apple and pear into slices and add them to the sangria, along with the cinnamon stick you kept.
  • Cover the jug and let the Sangria sit for a little while before serving.
  • Serve with a slice of orange and a sprig of rosemary.
