Recipe: white mulled wine

witte gluhwein

Mulled wine: no Christmas market or ice rink is complete without it. Its warm, spicy flavor also makes it the ultimate winter drink. Are you a fan of the red version? Then be sure to try the white mulled wine too.

White mulled wine is made with white wine, as you would expect. Preferably a sweet one. It doesn’t necessarily have to be a sweet Muscat; a richer Chenin Blanc or off-dry Riesling works too. The basic ingredients are the same as for the red version: cloves, lemon, cinnamon and sugar. Spices such as ginger, cardamom and star anise, along with a vanilla pod, are what add flavor to white mulled wine.

How to make white mulled wine

  • Pour the wine into a pan and heat it over low heat. The wine must not boil!
  • Cut the vanilla pod in half and use the back of a knife to scrape out the seeds. Peel the ginger and slice it.
  • Add the pod, seeds and other spices to the wine. Twist the orange and lemon peels over the pan before adding them. This releases the aromas extra well while heating.
  • Let the mulled wine infuse for 30 to 45 minutes.
  • Pour into mugs or wine glasses and serve.

Tip: add a splash of jenever—it makes it even more delicious!
