Go to a Michelin-starred restaurant
One person saves up for a 2.55 Chanel bag, another smashes open their piggy bank for the latest phone, and I prefer to spend my money on meals at amazing restaurants. Once, I went all out at the three-Michelin-starred De Librije in Zwolle and paid a bill of more than 600 euros without batting an eyelid.
Some people declared me crazy, because why would you spend so much money on “just a bite to eat”? Excuse me, can I decide for myself what I spend my money on? Besides, it is certainly not just a bite to eat. People my age—late twenties—also wondered whether it would be incredibly boring. Well, I certainly did not expect that, and it really isn’t.
Little mounds of foam
I recommend trying fine dining to everyone at least once. With the first bite and sip, you’ll know what I mean. I can’t afford it every week, and perhaps you can’t either, so the anticipation is immense. Just like a holiday, really. During those glorious few hours at the restaurant, you don’t have to think about anything else and it’s all about food at the very highest level. No, these aren’t dainty little dishes with mounds of foam and half an asparagus spear. No, you don’t have to wear an evening gown and a three-piece suit, and no, there isn’t any stiff service looking at you sourly.
Just do it!
Just do it if you’re curious. Set some money aside every month if you can and make a reservation. It certainly doesn’t have to be at De Librije, but it is my most wonderful dining experience ever. Above all, don’t feel too young; you won’t be surrounded only by ‘old people’. The staff welcome you with open arms, they don’t look down on you, and you’ll have an experience you’ll never forget. They really don’t expect you to have the very best knowledge of wine or to know everything about everything. They know it all, so you can ask the staff a thousand questions.
Oh, and if you did buy that ridiculously expensive bag, this is the perfect moment to show it off.
