How to make the ultimate grilled cheese from Chef

Any foodie worth their salt has seen the film Chef, perhaps more than once. How could you not, with all those delicious food scenes? The very best one, if you ask us? The super-cheesy grilled cheese. Luckily, it’s not difficult at all to make at home yourself.

In the film Chef, Jon Favreau plays a disgraced restaurant chef who rediscovers his love of cooking while driving a food truck across the country. Although the film is filled with mouthwatering recipes, the most exciting one has to be the grilled cheese sandwich he makes for his son. The secret? Three types of cheese and a little patience.
Get cooking
It starts with a pan. If you make a grilled cheese in a pan, only good things can happen. Crisp, buttery bread, perfectly melted cheese and, if you’re lucky, a piece of crispy cheese that has snuck out during cooking. As for the bread: use good sourdough for this grilled cheese from Chef. And when it comes to the filling, be generous—the cheese-to-bread ratio has to be perfect. Nothing is more disappointing than biting into a grilled cheese and barely tasting any cheese. There should be so much that you have to be careful not to burn your mouth. Use two types of cheddar—yellow and bright orange cheddar—, Gruyère and Parmesan.
Into grilled cheese heaven
Put some oil in the pan. Spread a generous layer of butter on both slices and place them next to each other in the pan, buttered side down. Turn the heat down a little, because patience is a virtue in this case too. Stack all the slices of cheese on both slices of bread and combine them once the bread is just starting to turn brown. So take your time and check every now and then whether the bread is nicely crispy and brown. When you press them together, spread another layer of butter on the top as well. If the outside is perfectly golden brown but the cheese in the middle hasn’t melted completely yet, your pan is too hot. Once the bread is brown and all the cheese has melted, cut it diagonally for maximum gooeyness. Watch out for the piping-hot cheese and, before you know it, you’ll be in grilled cheese heaven. Moaning is allowed.
