Another delicious Netflix series is coming soon, one that will teach you all the basics of cooking. Mark October 19 in your calendar for the release of Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat.

I previously wrote about the book Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat: The Four Elements of Good Cooking, in which chef and food writer Samin Nosrat explains how to use the four basic elements of cooking to prepare every dish perfectly. How do you make flaky pastry and how far in advance should you salt a steak? How do you use acid to give your dishes the perfect balance? Once you understand these four elements, you can tackle any recipe.

International cuisines

The name Samin Nosrat may not mean much to you, but she worked for a long time at Chez Panisse in Berkeley, one of the leading restaurants for modern American cuisine. In the show, she visits the restaurant, but also travels to the kitchens of Japan, Mexico and Italy to see how salt, fat, acid and heat are used there. What about the blazing-hot teppanyaki grill, and what is the perfect sweet-and-sour balance for Sicilian caponata?

The series is produced by the same people who also produced Cooked by Michael Pollan, so that promises a lot. If you haven’t seen that one yet, you should do so very soon. Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat will be on Netflix from October.
