Tips & tricks

Surviving your first week in student housing (without cooking skills)

heel veel empanadas

Like young birds, fresh students are leaving the parental nest en masse these weeks. Only when the last moving box has been dragged through the narrow stairwell into the 5m2 room does panic set in. What am I supposed to eat now?!

Mum isn’t standing by with her nutritious meals. And with cooking skills worse than the average Temptation Island episode, a life full of microwave lasagna and instant noodles flashes before your eyes. Don’t stress. Why cook when you can also order food for next to nothing? The following meals won’t immediately mean ‘Bye-bye, salary!’ and will save you precious (student) time.

Amsterdam

Baires Empanadas Argentinas is perfect when there’s almost empa-nada left in your bank account. You can order these delicious filled Argentine pastries for as little as €3.80 each.

We know Turkish pizza by now. How about manoushe from The Labanese Sajeria? Say what? You can order this Lebanese rolled ‘pizza’ made with flatbread and topped with ingredients such as halloumi, mint, tomato and cucumber (yes, healthy too) for just €7.

Nijmegen

A burger with in-house smoked beef, homemade barbecue sauce and pico de gallo – named after Nimma’s most famous woman. You can get the Jack Daniels BBQ burger from Smokehouse De Kronenburger (or one of the many others) for as little as €7.30.

Normally, sushi is more of a beginning-of-the-month meal, but you can always get a poké bowl at Kaniwa. A sushi burrito costs as little as €9.50.

Delft

Delft students prefer to hang out at The Hangout. Partly because it’s next to TU Delft, but also because you can order the tastiest burgers or fish and chips (€9) there for a reasonable price.

Rice and Pasta. Sounds simple – and it is. A huge selection of rice and pasta dishes, including Thai curry, Spanish meatballs and Cambodian khmer lok lak. And the best part: a meal costs just €5.00.

Rotterdam

Missing your mother’s loving cooking? Ask one of the Surinamese mums at Warung Mirosso to make you a delicious plate of roti chicken. A hug in meal form from €9.50.

The most popular student meal is the universally known pasta pesto (of course prepared with a bargain jar of pesto and dry pasta). If you want real fresh pasta pesto, you can order it from Pastabar Sicily for just €9.95.

Utrecht

Okay, everyone can get some fries from the local snack bar. But fries from the Dapp Frietwinkel are different. Here, the fries are freshly cut every day, which makes them extra delicious.

To balance out the fries a little, finish with something healthy. At Urban Salad, you can choose a salad or wrap packed with vegetables – for example, the Caesar or Asian Chicken (€10).
