Tasting: golden chicken wings

For $1000,- you can now eat fifty chicken wings at New York restaurant The Ainsworth. Ultra-chic, golden chicken wings, that is. With champagne. We’re already putting some money aside, because we want this.

We can hear you thinking: isn’t that a bit over the top? Above all, chicken wings should simply be deliciously crispy, greasy and succulent, right? We completely agree. It seems the restaurant has thought of that too. The wings first simmer for a day in coconut butter with chipotle and honey, and are then fried until crispy. You dip them in melted blue cheese. Sounds good. And if the flavor is already perfectly on point, then that fancy golden coating (24-carat, nothing fake about it) is simply a fantastic extra. Not in terms of flavor, because the edible gold leaf has none, but definitely for the eye. Because hey, that deserves a little something now and then too.
Can you actually eat gold?
Well, naturally you shouldn’t get kilos of it in your stomach, but a little won’t do any harm. And although it may not look that way, the wings are finished with only a very thin layer.
