The best ice cream in Amsterdam

Throughout my childhood, I went to Italy every summer, and I always insisted that truly Italian ice cream didn’t exist in the Netherlands. Until Massimo Gelato opened in Amsterdam’s De Pijp.

There’s no shortage of places where you can get a scoop of ice cream after dinner, but nowhere did it taste to me like it does at the gelaterias in Italy. Sometimes I thought I was getting close – at Pisa in the Rivierenbuurt, for example – but whenever I was back in Italy, I came to the same conclusion. How can it be that the ice cream there is always better? I have no idea, but fortunately Massimo does.
A true Italian
His ice cream is as creamy and full of flavour as can be. Exactly as you get it in Italy. No wonder, either: Massimo is a true Italian, and making ice cream runs in the family. His uncle used to make ice cream with milk from his grandmother’s dairy shop. So there’s plenty of knowledge in-house, and he also uses only the very best ingredients, sometimes flown in all the way from his native country. Craving strawberry ice cream? Come in summer, because they only use seasonal fruit.
Fior di latte ice cream
When it comes to flavours, you’ll find all the classics here, from pistachio (with nuts from Sicily) and hazelnut (from Piedmont) to chocolate and my all-time favourite, fior di latte. Fior di latte is a very creamy cheese, in the style of mozzarella. That may sound strange for ice cream, but the flavour is very mild. A kind of vanilla ice cream, but even more delicious. They also make more unusual flavours such as ricotta with figs, and there are always a few vegan flavours among them.
