This Parisian Sausage Vending Machine Is Like a FEBO Deluxe

We know the bread vending machine in Belgium and egg and fresh fruit vending machines in our own country. In LA, there’s a cupcake vending machine, and in various countries vending machines even dispense hot dishes, such as pizza or kebab. But Paris has a Basque ‘sausage vending machine’.

Never Not Eating

Shopping for food 24/7 is becoming increasingly commonplace. A few years ago in Rome, I saw a vending machine for freshly roasted coffee beans. And let’s not forget our own snack vending machines, for that much-needed late-night diagonal sandwich.

Foodie Street

Still, the vending machine on the trendy Parisian foodie street Rue de Charonne (11th arrondissement) is in a completely different league. The Basque butcher’s shop L’ami Txulette (txuleta is Basque for steak) fills the refrigerated vending machine daily with vacuum-packed homemade delicacies such as confit de canard, Bayonne ham, carpaccio and Basque pâté.

The artisanal butcher cares so much about his customers that he also wants to serve them on the two days a week the shop is closed (including Sunday, when the culinary capital of the world inexplicably shuts down completely anyway).

Faux-Filet Steak

In addition, the vending machine is a godsend for young Parisians working night shifts at hospitals, bars and elsewhere, who come home from work with empty stomachs and shopping bags.

Prices range from around 4 euros for a packet of ham to 34 euros per kilo for a faux-filet steak. Bavette à l’échalotte also rolls out of the machine 24/7. That could make for an interesting diagonal sandwich.
