Tip: Tjin’s has everything you need

tjin’s toko

If there’s one Amsterdam shop you can go to for all your ingredients, it’s Tjin’s. Besides pretty much all the Asian products you could ever need, you can also find ingredients from the British kitchen, American products or Mexican ingredients here. Name it and Tjin’s has it.

I used to live around the corner from Tjin’s. A golden age. Not only because I wasn’t grey yet and corona didn’t exist, but also because on Saturdays, after a night out (huh, that really sounds prehistoric!), I could get the best hangover food here, and during the week I could marvel at and lose myself in the incredible selection. In the hamlet where I live now, I have to make do with exotic supermarket products—fortunately, there are more and more of them, but still: they don’t come close to Tjin’s selection.

Taco Tuesday

Taco night on the agenda? Craving a nachos bake? A visit to Tjin’s and you’ll have everything at home. From soft corn tortillas to chipotle e adobo to spice up your sour cream. You can also find all kinds of dried peppers here to make your own mole sauce, as well as fresh tomatillos.

American

You also visit this (online) shop for all the weird things you’ve ever seen in American TV shows. From Twizzlers to Cap’n Crunch or Froot Loops cereal, Pop-Tarts, Kool-Aid, Hershey’s or Reese’s peanut butter cups. You’re also in the right place for all kinds of barbecue sauce or New Orleans dirty rice mix.

Let’s bake!

American or English baking recipes often call for unusual ingredients. Golden syrup, Crisco shortening, different types of flour, icing sugar or ready-made frosting. You’ll find it all here. Most products sold in the shop can also be ordered from the online store.

Takeaway

If you don’t feel like going into the kitchen yourself, you can also pick up delicious exotic food here. Around lunchtime, there’s always a queue for pom sandwiches, Surinamese meatballs and spicy chicken with pickles and peppers. You can also get good lemper, savoury pastries, bami and rice here. In short, if you don’t know Tjin’s yet, now you know where to go!
