10 Cheap Supermarket Favorites
Let’s be brief: grocery shopping at the supermarket costs us an arm and a leg every single time. Luckily, there are a few editorial favorites that are still relatively cheap and that make us incredibly happy every time. Do you already know these cheap-ass delights?
Hazelnut chocolate
Instead of looking at eye level, FavorFlav’s Bo often picks products found at the bottom of the shelf. Because those are a lot cheaper. And yes, they can be really delicious too. Like this chocolate. Bo: ‘I’m an ultimate chocolate lover; not a day goes by that I don’t eat chocolate. This delicious bar costs just €0.65. Bingo!’
Instant noodles
A packet of instant noodles (for example, Yum Yum, €0.59 per packet) is always a good idea too. They may have a reputation as student food and hangover fare, but instant noodles are a favorite in the editorial office. They cost next to nothing and with a few tasty additions you can easily turn them into a proper dinner. There is quite a difference between the brands and flavors; these are our favorite instant noodles.
For drinks and snacks
Bo: ‘A drinks platter without Garlan herb cheese? Huh, how does that work? This herb cheese is always a hit. And no, not only after one too many glasses of wine. Even when we’re sober, it’s a hit at our house—and all for just €1.09 per tub.’
Donut for next to nothing
We sing Lidl’s praises more often (this tiramisu, oh boy..) But this is also a real editorial favorite: for just €0.59, this delicious—we repeat: delicious—vanilla donut with glaze and vanilla filling is yours.
Focaccia
Bake-off focaccia for dinner: it’s not exactly nutritious, but still… When FavorFlav’s Bo doesn’t feel like cooking, she throws a focaccia in the oven, ‘with Garlan on top, of course!’ The bake-off focaccia with rosemary and sea salt is a favorite. Cheap-ass enjoyment for €2.69. (Two years ago, this focaccia still cost €1.99—talk about inflation…)
Cottage cheese
Cottage cheese, also known as curd cheese: you love it or you hate it. But it contains a lot of protein and is also cheap (€0.89 for a tub). For fans of the stuff: delicious on a cracker with some pepper sprinkled on top or mixed with avocado.
Bapao
A true freezer essential: the well-known bapao. After a night out, for lunch, two for dinner, or simply any time you’re tired of life: pop a bapao (€1.19 each) in the microwave. Note to self: restock the freezer soon.
Cheese snacks
These chips stick nicely to your teeth, but boy, are they tasty! The aftertaste is intense, and so are your hands after eating cheese or peanut butter snacks, but a bag costing €0.64 is guaranteed to disappear. Penny wafers
Penny wafers, those crunchy, cheap ‘chocolate’ cookies—who doesn’t know them? Not hip at all, but oh, how delicious they are with tea or coffee. And seriously now: €0.85 for 8 wafers—you’re only hurting your own wallet if you leave them behind.
