Whether you’re looking for a new tea mug, champagne glasses, a cushion for that new chair or a tree-trunk side table, Xenos is the answer to everything. Yes, even if you want to buy something to eat or drink: the store is packed with it. And it has to be said: some products are, uh… pretty remarkable. These are the 10 weirdest products you can currently buy at Xenos.
Xenos’s food and drinks section is a colorful collection of Asian products for cooking and baking, crazy Japanese drinks and extremely sweet baking supplies. We find gems there (such as Ramune, the sweet but also refreshing and fizzy Japanese drink with the glass marble, Ligo Cheese Balls Hot, the cookbook De bijbel van de Indonesische keuken by Maureen Tan and Barkley’s mints in different flavors) but also products that make you think: ‘who buys this?’
Bruschetta (which isn’t really bruschetta) (€1.79)
Bruschetta is an Italian delicacy made from grilled bread rubbed with garlic and drizzled with olive oil. Traditionally, it’s also topped with sliced tomatoes and basil: then it’s truly complete. And how: delicious! The packaging of this Xenos product says bruschetta, but actually this is just dry bread packaged in plastic. What a shame! If you like bruschetta seasoning, look for Xenos’s bruschetta seasoning mix. Delicious in homemade meatballs or in your pasta sauce. Or to make delicious sandwiches yourself.
Giant sprinkles for cakes and cupcakes (€1.99)
One bite of your muffin covered with these enormous sticks and your tooth will break off. Bet?
Penne with broccoli from a packet (€1.99)
Let’s please not get lazy about absolutely everything in our lives. We can make time for a simple fresh pasta dish, right, instead of going for this ready-made junk that only requires us to pour boiling water over it?
Smucker’s Goober strawberry & peanut butter (€2.99)
Peanut butter & jelly sandwiches are world-famous. In America, that is. If you’d also like to give them a try: here you have it in a jar, with the jam and peanut butter separated into cute stripes. Tasty, huh!
Birthday Cake Cookie dough bites (€2.49)
For when you don’t want a whole slice of your birthday cake right away, but just a bite. Only to end up shoving the whole box into your mouth anyway. And then: regret! Because they’re sickeningly sweet and make you feel as nauseous as a terrible party.
Sweet bell pepper drops (€2.59)
Cute and handy too, these sweet bell pepper drops. You’ll never have to cut those annoying pepper strips again when you want them in your salad.
Cotton Candy with Fruit Juicy Red flavor (€4.59)
Cotton candy in a bag with a tropical fruit flavor (Hawaiian punch). Doesn’t this just sound horrifying? For the same insane price, there’s also red-colored cotton candy with the flavor of Dr. Pepper.
Peanut & lime chocs (€1.29)
This really seems like too much of a good thing: chocolate bonbons with peanut butter and lime. The lime simply wasn’t necessary, if you ask me.
Banana-flavored tea (€1.59)
There is tea in millions of fruit flavors. Somehow, we hardly ever see banana-flavored tea on store shelves, except at Xenos (and perhaps a tea shop or Toko). You’d almost think there’s a reason for that. Black tea in pyramid-shaped bags, with such an overpowering banana flavor—is that something for you?
Muddy Bears gummy bears with chocolate (€2.49)
These are gummy bears with a layer of chocolate around them. Do you need any more explanation? I don’t think so.
