7 of the Weirdest Products at Lidl
A trip to the supermarket is an outing, especially when you come across the weirdest things. Because how on earth do they come up with them? This time: 7 weird products you can find at Lidl.
Lidl often surprises us with things we didn’t know we needed. Croissant bread, for example. A mini barbecue, pinsa with ham and plenty of gluten-free products. But some things we’d rather leave on the shelves…
Crispy air-fryer/oven bites with white chocolate and strawberries
My colleague Wieke already wrote about them: Lidl now sells chocolate bitterballen. Of the two varieties, she would have preferred to stock up on the choco & caramel-sea salt version in bulk, so she could always have them in the freezer. The other variety gave her chills: white chocolate & strawberries. And honestly: can we blame her? I wonder if anyone is enthusiastic about this combination.
Dates with cheese
It’s the perfect snack for anyone who wants to indulge with as little guilt as possible: the stuffed date. Delicious with a piece of walnut or a smear of peanut butter. Also good: wrapping them in bacon and putting them in the oven. But definitely NOT the piece of cheese Lidl has put inside these dates. I seriously think they cut up Cheesestrings and used them to fill these dates.
Chicken shawarma pizza
Perfect for people who feel like stuffing themselves with something deliciously greasy and can’t choose between pizza and shawarma. This is undoubtedly what you’ll crave after a night out. Prefer pizza with fries? They sell that at Lidl too.
Duokaas Cow, tomato & olive and Goat, honey & thyme
There is simply a lot going on in this cheese. Separately, I genuinely believe they’re delicious—goat cheese, honey and thyme are one of the best food combinations out there—but together… I think your mouth will get an error message when you put this duokaas in it. Or you could cut it into separate cubes, but then I’d still rather buy these flavors separately.
Chicken cordon bleus in a large plastic bag
No, there is nothing wrong with chicken cordon bleus (they’re incredibly tasty, actually). But I did have to laugh a little when I saw this large 750-gram plastic bag lying in the freezer. Ideal if this is your absolute, absolute, absolute favorite meat and you always want to have a chicken cordon bleu on hand.
Sliced mushrooms in a jar
I know it’s convenient to have long-life food in a jar. But there really are varieties that make me think: just buy them fresh. If only because it looks like it could easily find a place in the biology classroom, among the specimens preserved in jars. (Sorry if you love eating these and I’ve ruined them for you forever with this comment.)
Chocolate popcorn with coconut
We see unusual popcorn flavors more often. Like dropcorn: popcorn with licorice flavor. We think this chocolate popcorn with coconut is too much of a good thing. It is far too removed from the light, crunchy popcorn we love to snack on during a movie. I also don’t think this is popcorn you’ll keep reaching for, because the coconut flavor is quite dominant. Which may actually be a positive thing.
