10 slippery foods we really can’t stand

Aspic-Favorflav

Slither, slather, what a slippery business. Some foods barely make it down your throat, or are already deliciously ‘slippery’ by nature. For some, it’s a delightful sensation; for others, a horror. Is your (least) favorite jiggly food on the list too?

Pudding

Bo: ‘A little predictable perhaps, but an old-fashioned jellied pudding simply can’t be missing from this list. I know some people love it, a cheerfully colored jiggly dessert on the table, but I’d rather have a piece of chocolate.’

Paté

Sharon: ‘Paté, oh no! And I don’t mean the paté itself—I can appreciate that from time to time—but that disgusting layer on top really gives me the shivers. A typical case of you hate it or you love it. You really have to be able to handle that jiggly, gelatinous mouthfeel; I can’t stand it. And apparently—the horror!—aspic is making a comeback…’

Slimy snails

Sabina: ‘They’re slippery enough as it is, but adding garlic butter doesn’t make things any better. And to think this is a delicacy in many countries—not for me, though. I have no desire to deal with that slippery mess.’  We previously wrote about 5 overrated delicacies—and yes, snails, those slimy creatures, are among them too.

Lychees

Wieke’s guilty pleasure is canned peaches, deliciously slippery food. According to her, lychees are just a touch worse: ‘This practically slides straight down your throat, no thanks.’

Salmon sashimi

Lauretta: ‘We all know that moment: you pick up a nice slice of salmon sashimi with your chopsticks and splat—there it is. Right in the middle of the table, in a restaurant no less. Awkward… I simply can never manage to get that slippery salmon to my mouth with chopsticks in a remotely respectable way.’

Runny egg

Delilah: ‘An undercooked boiled egg with egg white that hasn’t set yet. Enough to make you gag…’

Dunking cookies

Sabina: ‘Also impossible: people who dunk their cookies in tea and then leave them in too long, and splat! A blob ends up half on the rim of the cup.’

Canned carrots

Lauretta: ‘Canned carrots… they’re always so slippery and slushy from all that juice. Yuck.’

That skin, brrr

We love hot chocolate with Baileys, Nuttela or simply the ‘classic’, it’s all good. But a warm skin forming on our hot chocolate? No, thank you.’

Strawberry tart with a layer of gelatin

Bo loves anything sweet: cake, cookies, chocolate, you name it, she eats it. But a delicious strawberry tart with a slippery layer of gelatin on top? That’s where she draws the line: ‘How can you ruin such a delicious tart by putting such a slippery layer on it? It’s a culinary crime, yuck!’
