As much as we sometimes (or rather: quite often) like to get all fancy about food, we all have a soft spot for stuff that’s disgusting and delicious at the same time. But it’s not just us—neither are you guys! These are the favorite disgustingly delicious snacks of FavorFlav’s readers. Is your guilty pleasure among them too?
Canned fruit
Why peel fruit when you can buy ‘disgusting! Or is it actually delicious? Canned mandarins!’? Canned fruit definitely scores well with our readers. ‘Those sweet canned peaches.’ Also badass: ‘Bowl! With cheap booze in it and that canned fruit.’
Childishly simple
In the category: just as delicious as when I was little: ‘Rice with sugar’, ‘Macaroni with applesauce’, ‘Mona semolina pudding with redcurrant sauce’. One reader is so enthusiastic about their disgustingly delicious favorite that they immediately add a full description and festive dessert suggestion: ‘Saroma instant pudding, a typical 1950s product that my grandmother always gave me. These days it’s available under the name Kloppudding from Dr. Oetker. You take a bowl of cold milk, add the pudding powder, mix for 1 minute (you especially don’t want any lumps), and put it in the fridge for 10 minutes. The result is a beautiful, sickly sweet, jiggly fake pudding. A pudding that looks just as chemical as it tastes. My favorite is strawberry, bright pink in color. Also available in banana or caramel. Feel like doing something crazy? Make a cheerful, brightly colored trio of dessert puddings—and add whipped cream from a can for those who like it.’
Grilled cheese all the way
Two slices of bread under the grill can apparently hold all kinds of things, as it turns out. A top three from the disgustingly delicious suggestions: ‘A peanut butter grilled cheese’, ‘Grilled cheese with brie and pesto’ (never tell an Italian, okay? And preferably not a French person either), ‘A frikandel grilled cheese!’
Sausage sandwich with
Also striking: upgrading an ordinary liverwurst sandwich. Because apparently you can put sprinkles on that too (huh? Really?!): ‘Liverwurst with sprinkles, delicious!’ Prefer a spicy topping? That works too, according to this reader: ‘Liver pâté with curry!’
On such a deliciously soft white bun
You can vary endlessly too: ‘A bun with Jodenkoek’, ‘A bun with butter speculaas’, ‘Soft white bun with fries!’ I personally have very fond memories of that last one. A former colleague ate this every Friday, and every week: roaring laughter. Although, it has to be said, this really is a top combo. Disgustingly delicious to the max, people! And of course that also applies to the bun-with-fries family: ‘A chips sandwich!’
Fast food
And of course often suggested too: the disgustingly delicious snacks everyone really enjoys every now and then: ‘Chicken nuggets with a McFlurry; a golden combo!’, ‘Topking Vlamtosti’ and: ‘Big Mac, still a favorite of mine.’
Boursin, the best
Parties with a Boursin cracker: wonderfully old-school cozy. But you can do much more with Boursin. ‘Creamy pasta with Boursin’, ‘Cauliflower with Boursin dipping sauce’, ‘Creamed spinach, but specifically the version with Boursin from Iglo.’ In short, put Boursin on your next shopping list!
Fill that groove
The fact that celery has a groove doesn’t mean you have to fill it. But still: ‘Celery salad in the groove of celery’ and ‘Celery with peanut butter’; they’re hits.
Can someone call pest control?
‘My boyfriend thinks it’s really disgusting, but I like it—does that count as disgustingly delicious? I like eating a cracker with hummus and a handful of mealworms on top. They’re packed with protein and deliciously crunchy. You can also snack on mealworms just like that, instead of popcorn.’ A category of its own, but fine, we approve. Extra bonus points for sustainability.
Hangover food
If something is truly inedible, except when you’re drunk: ‘Pizza topped with fries’, ‘A sliced-open frikandel with satay sauce and onions’, ‘An omelet with fried-in smoked beef sausage’ and ‘Brownie with bacon’. You’d almost knock back six glasses of tequila.
