10x products supermarket employees have no idea what you’re talking about #5

Gall & Gall

The reactions to articles about grocery shopping just keep coming. If it’s not the customers saying and doing the most appalling things, it’s the supermarket employees themselves who leave us astonished. You really went all out again, and these are the most striking annoyances in the jungle known as the supermarket.

CHILDREN’S FIREWORKS

Imagine being 32 and having to show ID because you’re buying children’s fireworks for your son. That’s what happened to Thea. ‘The employee behind the checkout was 100% convinced that you had to be 18+ to buy CHILDREN’S fireworks.’ Huh?

No reselling to minors

Marita wasn’t allowed to take a bottle of wine with her, do you know why? ‘Because I had my daughter, who wasn’t even 4 months old, with me and the new policy was that no alcohol could be sold if there were children present, because of passing alcohol and tobacco on outside.’ We couldn’t hold back our laughter at this one.

Beetroots and kiwis

Jacqueline: ‘People who think radishes are “very small beetroots” and find it strange when there are “hairs on those little melons” – no, those are kiwis….

Tasty too, but still

Benny had been given one task: pick up steak tartare. ‘They didn’t have any, he said. And what do you think? Benny came back with speculaas. Was that supposed to work too?’ This short-circuits our brains as well.

Limburg cheese…

Chris asked for a piece of Limburg cheese in a cheese shop in Goes… The saleswoman said that Chris would really have to go to Limburg for that. Haha!

DIY…

‘If you ask for pudding buns and the employee thinks they can help by recommending a carton of custard and bread rolls. “Then you can make pudding buns yourself!”’ Jos politely declined and explained that he wasn’t skilled enough to make pudding buns with those ingredients. An honest answer and, truth be told: also a helpful employee.

Tofu?

Ellen wondered where the tofu was and was directed to the aisle with adhesive tape and twine…

Tahini

‘“Where can I find the tahini?” Iris asks an employee. “So I say that it’s sesame paste, after which the employee replies that they only sell hazelnut spread. Tasty too, but not with my chickpeas.”’

Artichokes

Renata: ‘“Where can I find the canned artichokes?”, to which the employee says, “Isn’t that a type of fish?”’ The employee was probably thinking of anchovies?

Slipover?

It doesn’t only happen in supermarkets that employees have no idea what you’re talking about. Take Olga, who, together with her mother, asked a salesperson in an upscale clothing store, ‘Do you also sell a slipover?’  ‘That poor boy turned completely red and had no idea that we were looking for a sleeveless sweater…’
