So annoying; suddenly your trousers feel like they’re about to burst because your stomach is really acting up. Bloating can ruin your entire day, especially if you have to go out. But did you know there’s actually quite a lot you can do about it?

Even if you may not really feel like it, certain types of food can definitely help with this! Even if you’re already suffering from it, but you can also eat plenty of these foods preventively.

These foods and drinks help against bloating

1. Avocados
Avocados are packed with potassium, which is needed to regulate the salt level in your body. The more balanced your sodium levels are, the less water you retain — because when they’re out of balance, this causes bloating. With this avocado guide, you’ll always know whether your avocado is still good to eat.

2. Bananas
Several studies have already been conducted into the effects of bananas on bloating; one study showed that women who ate a banana before a meal experienced less bloating than women who didn’t. Experts suspect this is because of certain bacteria in your intestines that can reduce gas production. Pretty bad news, then, that bananas are threatened with extinction. Whààt?! Yes – that was our reaction too when we heard this.

3. Celery
Celery is perfect if you want to hydrate quickly and properly. It also contains small molecules that can counter inflammation — including inflammation in your intestines, which is what makes you feel so bloated.

4. Turmeric
A bite of turmeric doesn’t sound very appealing, but it’s good to cook with if you often suffer from bloating. Or make a turmeric latte, for example! Turmeric can also help with the pain if you have IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome). Since ginger works well too (see point 6), you could try making this delicious turmeric-ginger soup.

5. Mint
A peppermint can also help; the mint flavor calms the muscles in your digestive system. The sugar it contains may be a deal-breaker for you; in that case, a cup of mint tea is ideal.

6. Ginger
…Or a cup of ginger tea. A ginger shot can also work wonders; it gets your digestion going and helps your stomach empty faster — which means less bloating. Just be careful not to get ripped off with ginger shots.

7. Asparagus
If you can forget about the smell in the bathroom afterward… Then this is extremely effective against bloating. Asparagus is packed with inulin, a fiber that is very nourishing for the good bacteria in your intestines. That’s right: asparagus is very good for your bowel movements.

8. Fennel
Did you know that fennel contains a substance that relaxes your stomach and intestinal tract? This means you’ll suffer less from spasms in this area of your body, allowing gas to pass through your intestines more easily. And voilà: goodbye, bloating.

10. Tomatoes
Tomatoes aren’t just packed with potassium; they also contain lots of lycopene. This is a phytonutrient (a plant-based substance) that has an anti-inflammatory effect throughout your body — so it doesn’t just help with bloating, but is good for your entire body.

11. Kefir
Do you often suffer from bloating? Try having the fizzy fruit drink kefir for breakfast or lunch. Fermented drinks such as kefir, as well as kombucha, for example, promote digestion, increase enzyme production and are a source of vitamins. Several studies have shown that consuming these drinks can help reduce bloating by up to 70 percent — but make sure you mix them with the right ingredients. Kefir with banana and flaxseed, for example; then your day can’t go wrong. Or try making your own elderflower kefir.

Hopefully, you’ll get rid of your bloating in no time!
