5 bad kitchen habits we need to kick

If you ask people which cooking and kitchen habits of others annoy them the most, you’re in for a laugh… Partners, parents, housemates—everyone gets the blame, and almost always, what some people allow themselves to do in the kitchen is either hilarious or life-threatening. Do you recognize yourself in one or more of these habits?

Whether you ask them personally or via a platform like Reddit, people love to complain about which behavior from others in the kitchen they find truly blood-boilingly annoying. I freely admit that I’m notoriously bad at closing cupboard doors and drawers. Or hanging up tea towels. And what about partners who ‘lovingly’ save the last piece for you? Aaaarrggghhh! But some people—including our own editorial team—also find these things IMPOSSIBLE TO DEAL WITH:

Blazing burners

Every morning, it annoys FavorFlav’s Sharon when the man of the house makes his famous oatmeal breakfast. Or when her son boils pasta water in the evening. “Under every single pan and everything they’re cooking or baking… they turn the burner all the way up. Why?? It’s a waste of pans, food, and the money you might as well throw straight into the fire, considering the high gas or energy bill…” Understandable, because besides this logic, everything has a proper cooking temperature—just think of a soft, creamy omelet for breakfast versus a delicious crispy fried egg to go with nasi goreng. Keep experimenting with that gas knob, or simply follow the recipe, and you’ll soon find that people see you as a better home cook.

Leaving the foil on

As our Steffi rightly asked in desperation: why do you do this? Why, when opening a new container of hummus, cream cheese, peanut butter, whatever, do you peel the plastic or aluminum protective seal halfway off from under the lid, stick your knife somewhere into it, and then let the plastic flap back down? Why??

Gross kitchen behavior

Also incredibly annoying (because downright disgusting): leaving wet wipes, cloths, and sponges lying around on the counter, by the faucet, and around the sink. Tricky, too, because what are you supposed to do with them? I don’t know. But please don’t let them anywhere near my food…

Chop chop

Knives lying around where they don’t belong: incredibly dangerous. In any case (!), your good knife does not belong in the dishwasher, but imagine also reaching straight for the blade when you’re clearing everything away. Or finding a sharp knife hidden beneath the sudsy water in the sink, underneath the dirty dishes you’ve just dutifully decided to tackle…

Scraping pans

This really gets people riled up too, apparently: scraping an aluminum spatula around in a nonstick pan. And rightly so; a damaged nonstick coating can release toxic substances—and do you know what also happens in a mistreated pan? Food sticks.

So learn from someone else’s mistakes, and who knows, perhaps this list has caught you out too—let’s call it: room for improvement… Good luck!
