5 things you didn’t know about kiwis

Are you also crazy about kiwis? You probably already knew they contain a lot of vitamin C, but most people don’t know how they grow. This delicious and healthy little powerhouse comes with even more surprising facts:

Shave the skin
Many people only eat the inside of a kiwi, but the outside is also delicious! FavorFlav’s Delilah always eats the whole kiwi. You can easily remove the hairs from a kiwi while washing it.

Climbing plant
It takes 7 years for the tree on which kiwis grow to reach full maturity. Kiwis grow on a kind of vines. In the first year, the climbing plants are guided upwards into the air like a kind of tipi; in the second year, when they bear fruit, they are “laid flat” and the kiwis grow at a height that makes them easy to pick.

In the fridge
Kiwis are best stored in the fridge. Green kiwis are often a little firmer than yellow kiwis and are ideally taken out of the fridge a few days before you eat them. Store them in a fruit bowl out of the sun. Speed up the ripening process by placing them in a paper bag together with other fruit.
Vitamin C
In any case, eating more vegetables and fruit is always a good idea. Kiwi contains a high level of vitamin C. 100 grams of Zespri SunGold contains three times as much vitamin C as 100 grams of orange and more vitamin C than the green kiwi—which, in turn, contains more fiber and vitamin A.

Kiwi pizza
No pizza is as controversial as Hawaiian pizza, but it turns out you can also go fruit forward with kiwi on your pizza. It sparked hundreds of reactions on Reddit. Most reactions were at the far end of the shock spectrum: ‘This is what happens when you’re already standing on the thin ice that is Hawaiian pizza’ and ‘I think I just went blind’. A few people were open to the idea. What do you think? Fancy giving it a try?
