In other countries, the pizza toppings below are completely ordinary. Maybe we’re simply not used to anything at all. Or do you regularly put kiwi or cold fish on your pizza?

1. Coconut

If you can put pineapple on your pizza, why not coconut? Just as tropical, right? In Costa Rica, coconut on pizza is completely normal. Experts say that its flavour profile is comparable to that of pineapple on pizza. I try to imagine what it tastes like, and I have to say I’m not exactly enthusiastic about it. In my view, pineapple has a somewhat more pronounced flavour, but that may also be because you’re more used to having it on your pizza. (Yes, I am firmly on team pineapple-on-pizza.)

2. Bananas, curry powder and peanuts

Find the most random things you have and throw them on your pizza. That must be what the Swedes thought when this pizza was born. Bananas and peanuts together; okay. But bananas and curry powder? Or peanuts and curry powder? And all of that together—on a pizza? Someone must have been completely smashed when they came up with this?!

3. Kiwi

Kiwi pizza may sound even more tropical than pizza with pineapple or coconut. Could this also come from a tropical country, such as Costa Rica or Brazil? No, not at all. This creation was also dreamed up by the Swedes. You know what, maybe we shouldn’t be so judgy and should simply give it a try. Pizza with pineapple once sounded like a crazy idea too; now it even has a fan club, and you’ll find it on the menu at practically every pizzeria. Bonus: you get some extra vitamins out of it. I’d call that killing two birds with one stone. Maybe the Swedes really were quite brilliant after all.

4. Cold fish

Pizza with fish isn’t particularly unusual. Open a freezer in any supermarket and you’ll immediately see ready-made frozen pizzas with tuna. But cold pizza with fish? That’s a different story. In Russia, cold pizza served with tuna, salmon, mackerel and sardines is hugely popular. It’s called Pizza Mockba. Why it’s eaten cold is a mystery. I mainly think you’d get a serious error message in your head if you suddenly swallowed a bite containing four different pieces of cold fish, to be honest.

5. Mayonnaise and hard-boiled eggs

An egg with a dollop of mayonnaise on top is a divine snack. Why wouldn’t that work on a pizza? I have to admit I need a moment to get used to the idea of hard-boiled eggs lying on my pizza, but I do think mayonnaise is a fantastic idea. Think about it: basically, pizza is baked dough with tomato sauce and cheese. Why wouldn’t eggs and mayo go with that? You could easily put those on a regular sandwich too, right? The funny thing about this invention is that it comes from Italy—Pesaro, to be precise. There, it’s called Pizza Rossini. Italians, can you tell me why ketchup on your pasta is weird, but mayonnaise on your pizza isn’t?
