5x incomprehensible supermarket products #3

Albert Heijn is the king of bizarre, incomprehensible products. But what do you know? Albert Heijn is not the only Dutch supermarket guilty of this. In response to our article, you went wild about other strange supermarket products. We selected the most remarkable ones.

Air fryer fries
This one comes up often: fries specifically for the air fryer. In principle, there’s nothing wrong with that; in fact, we happily munch on the low-carb fries from Leon&Leon, specially developed for the air fryer. But still: air fryer fries… You might as well buy oven fries, is the general consensus. “They can also go in the air fryer and are quite a bit cheaper.” Who are we to disagree?
Pancake mix
Pancake mix that still requires you to add your own eggs and milk. Why not just flour, then? Flour costs 35 cents. It really is nonsense. If you look at the ingredients list for Koopmans Pancakes: wheat flour, buckwheat flour, corn flour, raising agents (E341, E501), salt. Want pancakes? You still have to add eggs, milk and butter yourself. Why make things complicated? Just buy flour!
Salami
In the same dubious category as ‘ham-wrapped chicory’, they also sell pizza salami at Albert Heijn. Why? “The salami won’t curl up when heated and is a convenient size for topping a pizza with,” says Albert Heijn. I’ve made pizza at home and put salami on it quite often, and believe me: it doesn’t curl up. And as for the size? Well, you can also simply cut or tear salami into small slices, right?
Boiled and peeled eggs
YUCK! I find this absolutely disgusting. So many questions come to mind. How long does it keep? How well-cooked are the eggs? Why are there only two? You’re now paying 75 cents for a boiled egg that has been sitting peeled in a plastic bag on the shelves for days. In the same store, you pay 40 cents for one free-range egg. Why on earth would you buy this? This completely baffles me!
Toastie bread
“Could you pick up some toastie bread?”
“You mean white Casino bread?”
“No, toastie bread…”
“What’s that?”
“White Casino bread, but more expensive and exclusively for making toasties. It’s exactly the right size for the toastie ham that’s still in the fridge.”
