6 Amsterdam cafés where you can still get actual ground beef on your nachos

nachos (1)

I love nachos, but for the past few years the list of ingredients seems to have been cut back a little. Ladies and gentlemen, where’s the ground beef? In my opinion, a good portion of nachos is not complete without a little meat, but you rarely come across this anymore. I went looking.

Give me ground beef

Crunchy tortilla chips, salsa, jalapeños, a huge mountain of melted cheese, crème fraîche, a dollop of guacamole and last but not least: lots of deliciously seasoned ground beef. That’s the perfect portion of nachos for me. But sadly, it’s a dying breed.
It’s great that we’re eating more and more vegetarian food; I’m also becoming more conscious of my meat consumption. But ground beef on nachos? As far as I’m concerned, that’s simply not something you should mess with. I went looking for Amsterdam restaurants where you can, as it should be, still get actual ground beef on your nachos.

Harlem

At Café Harlem on Haarlemmerstraat, the nachos are famous. If you’re lucky, you’ll get a spot on the terrace, a cold beer and these nachos: perfection.
Ingredients: Tortilla chips, ground beef, guacamole, salsa, sour cream, onion, red chili, cheddar, red & yellow bell pepper and cress.
Price: €10.50 / €15

Hendrix

Here you don’t just get nachos, no no—“sloppy nachos” are on the menu at Hendrix.
Ingredients: Tortilla chips, spicy ground beef, guacamole, cheddar, black beans, jalapeño salsa and sour cream.
Price: €9.50

Weesper

Okay, I’m adding Weesper to this list with great reluctance. The price they charge for some chips, cream and ground beef is ridiculous. Come on. But still, it does come with ground beef. Dear Weesper, take a few euros off the price and I’ll happily come by.
Ingredients: Tortilla chips, corn, red onion, bell pepper, kidney beans, jalapeño, cheese, crème fraîche, salsa, seasoned ground beef.
Price: €16

Spanjer & van Twist

Tasty, good and filling. The nachos at Spanjer & van Twist are perfectly fine!
Ingredients: Tortilla chips, tomato, jalapeños, red onion, cheddar, lettuce, ground beef, beans, guacamole, salsa, sour cream.
Price: €13.50

Parakeet

You’re guaranteed to be in good hands at Parakeet. It’s a nacho restaurant, after all! The menu features many different, elaborate veggie/chicken/pulled pork-style nachos. But there’s also a really delicious classic, with ground beef!
Ingredients: Homemade tortilla chips, 9-hour beef chili, black beans, cheddar, pickled jalapeños, white queso, red salsa, sour cream, avocado purée, lettuce and cilantro.
Price: €10 / €15

Cafe Sarphaat

At Sarphaat on Ceintuurbaan, you can enjoy good nachos! Nothing particularly spectacular, but simply what you see is what you get—and yes, here that means with ground beef!
Ingredients: Tortilla chips, ground beef, tomato, jalapeños, red onion, guacamole, cheddar and crème fraîche.
Price: €10.50

Tips welcome

This was actually quite difficult! Some of my old favorites that definitely used to have ground beef on their nachos have stopped serving it (ahem, Bar Baarsch!). Other places where you’d think they must have it only had chicken/veggie/pulled pork options (where’s the ground beef, Cannibale Royale, Rotisserie and Maxwell?). Do you know of any delicious nachos that aren’t on this list? Let me know and make my life a whole lot more enjoyable!
