6 really disgusting things from a can

There are plenty of things that are delicious from a can and handy to have at home (but please don’t hoard). Canned chickpeas, pomodoro tomatoes (preferably Mutti), Fish Tales tuna; all great. But we’d rather leave these canned things on the shelf…

Whole chicken
Yes, a whole one. It may be a small chicken, but that doesn’t make it any less revolting. Covered in a jelly-like layer of goo, it looks more like a naked alien. This chicken is cooked, by the way. So you can simply slide it out of the can, *plop* it onto your plate and dig in. Well, if you dare.
Chinese imitation duck
Not exactly great either. FavorFlav’s Emma tasted it first and narrowly avoided running to the bathroom in panic after the first bite. And that despite the expectations (how?!) being high. Maybe this was a textbook example of the canned wonders of Chinese cuisine! But unfortunately: the fake duck, made from gluten and with a spongy, unpleasant and strange texture, mostly tasted truly disgusting.
Snails
Without their shells, of course. Just available at the supermarket. Well, “just” available—I’d rather skip canned shellfish. These large canned snails are described as a “real French delicacy” and as being “delicious with herb butter from the oven.” Yes, when fresh. But like this? Um, no thank you.
Cheeseburger
And not just the burger itself, but canned with the bun and everything. According to the instructions, you can heat the can au bain-marie in a pan or simply eat it cold. Hello, bone-dry cheeseburger!

Stewed beef
Canned meat. Opinions on this vary quite a bit. For example, this chef loves canned frankfurters, and Danny Lee, owner of Chin Chin in Amsterdam, prefers spam with his noodles. Still, canned stewed beef certainly can’t compete with that homemade pot of stew that has been simmering for hours.
Sliced mushrooms
There’s nothing wrong with canned vegetables, such as tomatoes. After all, you can use them to make killer pasta sauces. There are very few reasons to buy sliced mushrooms from a can. Especially when, for the same price, you can simply get fresh mushrooms. With bite, then fried in butter. Heavenly!
