6 surprising peanut butter combinations

Peanut butter: besides simply eating it straight from the jar by the spoonful, it’s obviously an incredibly versatile thing. Once you’ve had or won the discussion with yourself or the kids about ‘is it sweet or savory’, you can spread, stuff and spoon it into just about anything to your heart’s content. What do you think of these surprising combinations?!

The marriage between peanut butter and chocolate is of course well known, and now that the spiced treats are back on the shelves, we’re also counting down to the return of peanut butter with kruidnoten. Even more interesting, however, are these duos:
Peanut butter and pickle sandwich
Not that crazy at all! Just think of gado gado, that crunchy Indonesian salad where peanut sauce is pretty much indispensable (except in this gado gado by Vanja van der Leeden, which is also brilliant without peanuts but with tahini). It’s often served with something fresh and sour too, such as atjar or ketimun; pickled cucumber. So, from there, the step to a peanut butter and pickle sandwich is an easy one, right? Delicious!
Peanut butter burger
I didn’t see this one coming either. But it definitely works! Especially if you make sure the peanut butter is a little soft and melted; even better if it’s actually a deliciously spicy Asian peanut sauce, and best of all if there’s bacon involved too.

Peanut butter with mayo
Interesting, interesting… Of course, we have our patatje oorlog, but in the southern United States this is apparently a tried-and-tested sandwich combination. I’m not completely sold yet. But it was ‘invented’ during the Great Depression of the 1930s, when other sandwich fillings were probably hard to come by. In that context, I can imagine that it’s a great way to fill your stomach with very few ingredients!
Peanut butter with bacon
Yes, bring it on… Can you already picture your brunch table upgraded with sandwiches featuring this creamy, salty dream combination on, for example, your American pancakes? Extra crunch bonus points for chunky peanut butter. And if you want to feel a little like Elvis, of course you’ll add banana slices too!
Peanut butter and sriracha sandwich
Back to the Asian corner, because this is absurdly delicious with sambal and cucumber too. When you want to upgrade your peanut butter and jam sandwich, try sriracha or sweet sambal manis. The same sweet aftertaste, but a notch more daring. And you naturally balance the heat with that deliciously thick layer of peanut butter. Also excellent: do as colleague Steffi does and spoon some peanut butter into your (spicy) instant noodles!
Peanut butter with dates
Also from Steffi, who knows her way around peanut butter: take the best dates in terms of value for money, namely Iranian ones, cut them open and stuff a little peanut butter inside the date. Instant treat!
