There’s nothing better than a deliciously juicy burger every now and then. You can get the best burgers at one of these 24 spots, but of course you can also head into the kitchen yourself. In just 5 steps, you can have a world-class burger in front of you—completely homemade. The only question is: how do you eat something like that without making a mess? We’re giving you 6 tips that will help you master even the biggest double-decker.

1. Turn it upside down

Eating your burger upside down may sound illogical. But it really isn’t. The bottom, meaning the lower half of the bun, is much thinner than the top: the “lid.” That makes it more likely that the lower half of the bun will tear when you hold your burger. Turn your burger over, and the sturdier top will catch the meat and the other toppings. Handy!

2. Go for a toasted bun

Soft buns can get very soggy when juices and sauces seep through the bread. If you toast your bun briefly, it becomes less absorbent. Besides, a crispy toasted bun tastes better than a soft one, don’t you think? If you’re making your burger at home, you can toast it yourself. Otherwise, choose a toasted bun at the burger joint.

3. Wrap the burger properly

Foil, greaseproof paper, napkins: anything works, as long as you wrap the burger up nicely. This catches everything that gets squeezed out of your burger. Luckily, many burger joints already do this for you. Making a burger yourself? Make sure you have enough “wrapping paper” at home.

4. Take smaller bites

We get it: you’d rather wolf down such a delicious burger as quickly as possible. Still, you’ll have more success if you take smaller bites. You’ll have much more control. Still too difficult? Then you can also cut your burger into small pieces.

5. Put your pinkies to work

Do you always hold your burger by clamping your thumbs underneath the bun and placing your other fingers on top of the burger? Try moving your pinkies underneath. That way, you’ll hold your bun much more firmly. You’ll notice that all the toppings stay neatly in place—exactly what you want when eating a burger, right?

6. Put the sauce on the right half of the bun

Another tip to prevent the bottom of your bun from becoming soggy: squeeze the sauce onto the top (rounded) side of your bun. Chances are your bun will therefore fall apart much less quickly.

Still made a mess?

With the tips above, you should be the king or queen of burger eating. Still made a mess? No worries, there are plenty of tips for getting those nasty grease stains out of your clothes. Chill: you probably already have most of what you need for this at home. No more greasy stress over stains!
