These Chains Secretly Don’t Grill Their Burgers

Be prepared: the information in this article might be disappointing. Because I’ll just give it away now, but our beloved Maccie is in it. What a horror. I was looking up which fast-food chains secretly don’t grill their burgers at all, and the site Eat This, Not That had the answer.

The good news: many of these chains (still) aren’t in the Netherlands, so we don’t have to worry about them. The bad news: well… It’s really the fact that Maccie is on the list.

These Fast-Food Chains Don’t Grill Their Burgers

1. White Castle

I’ve wanted to eat here for such a long time, because I see very mixed reviews about it on TikTok. Some people think the burgers are nothing special, while others think they’re amazing, but one thing is certain: they don’t touch the grill.

2. McDonald’s

Oh Maccie, what are you doing to me? Surely a decent burger should be prepared on the grill?! Apparently not: their burgers are placed between two griddle plates, which are then pressed together — that way, the burgers cook the fastest.

3. Five Guys

Honestly, this one disappointed me too, because I think their burgers are pretty delicious. And finally, there are a few locations in the Netherlands (unfortunately, not in Amsterdam yet). Their burgers are prepared as follows: first fried, then pressed flat (to create a smashburger), placed on a griddle and then placed on another griddle, so they’re cooked through properly.

4. Wendy’s

This doesn’t surprise me at all. I mean, if you serve square burgers (which they do here), I don’t expect much else from them. These burgers are cooked in large quantities and then placed in a warming tray. If they stay there too long, they’re no longer used for burgers but for their chili. No thanks.

5. Shake Shack

Aaaah, another disappointment. I ate this in London recently and thought it was so delicious again. Yes, even the portion of fries covered in chemical cheese sauce. Enjoyable. The burgers here are actually smashed really well, because they’re the thinnest burgers of all the chains. The smashing happens on a griddle. One positive: no butter or oil is used, but they fry the burgers in their own fat. That’s something, at least.

6. In-n-Out

The chain currently at #1 on the list of chains I still want to try. I think Shake Shack is very tasty, but I keep hearing more and more people say that In-n-Out is the better of the two. These are also pressed flat on a griddle, at a rapid pace; they’re ready in just four minutes.
