8 cooking tips people no longer want to hear (including MEP)

If you cook regularly, it’s very likely that you do some things on autopilot. You don’t really think about it anymore when you fill one of your largest pots completely with water to cook pasta, or do other things simply because you’ve never done them differently. And then you probably also read and hear all kinds of tips and advice, because we too love telling people how to cook. Well, these home cooks aren’t having any of that anymore…

They’ve had enough! You can shout as loudly as you like that this or that is the best method for something, but when push comes to shove, these readers of internet platform Tasty just want you to leave them alone. These are the tips and advice they happily ignore, in response to the question: which cooking advice do you ignore?
Shake it real good
“Recipes for dressing or vinaigrette absolutely loooove instructing you to add the oil in a thin stream while stirring. Bye. Just throw everything into a jam jar and shake it.”

I only see advantages
“Most pasta recipes say that you need to bring a huge pot of water to the boil for the pasta. When I’m eventually going to toss the pasta with a particular sauce, I use much less water than indicated. Just enough to cover the dry pasta by about two inches. This is useful for two reasons: firstly, the water boils much faster this way. Secondly, your pasta water will be much richer in starch, so the sauce will cling even better to every strand or shape of pasta.”
Pretty bland
“I almost always use more salt and garlic than the recipe calls for.”
Perfectly good grains
“Depending on which type of rice you use, rinsing is certainly not always necessary. With sushi rice, for example, you really don’t want it to become too sticky, but if you don’t rinse basmati or jasmine rice before using it, it’s really not the end of the world.”
Maximum efficiency
“I never make simple syrup [always handy to have on hand for the whisky sours] in a saucepan on the stove. I always make it in the microwave and stir the sugar in between until it has dissolved. Bonus points if you make it in something you can also store it in afterward – I hate unnecessary washing-up.”

Out of the jar
“I generally ignore the instruction to do mise en place. I just put the water on or put the pan on the heat, and then grab whatever I need at that moment, one thing at a time. All those different bowls and dishes for every ingredient?! Who are these people? Do they ever cook on weekdays? Do they ever have to do their own washing-up?!”
Delicious from a bag
“I know a secret: contrary to what recipe writers would have you believe, using pre-grated cheese will not always completely ruin your dish.”
Fat chance
“Many recipes will tell you to throw away the fat from frying ground beef. Hell, no! Fat adds flavor! Use it to sauté your vegetables, for example, and the result will be so much more delicious.”
