5x the best TikTok tips and hacks of 2021, part 1

TikTok as a medium is now virtually impossible to imagine without as a source of handy kitchen and cooking tips. Remember that pasta with feta from the oven that apparently caused feta to sell out in some places? What a situation! But there are also countless great ideas to be found (and shared) when it comes to clever tricks, hacks and cleaning tips…

We, too, are sometimes amazed by how seemingly simple yet useful the often cheerful videos are. Learn a new way to peel boiled eggs in no time, get Tupperware containers clean, or make delicious broccoli? No problem, TikTokers have your back. These are five of the best TikToks from last year, so they’re here to stay:

A quarter’s supply of garlic

It does require some preparation, namely peeling a huge quantity of garlic cloves. But then you only have garlic-scented hands once (just wash them with one of those stainless-steel ‘soaps’) and, for the coming period, chopped garlic that requires no more effort than reaching into the freezer. If only someone could also come up with a solution for the amount of disposable plastic bags needed for this, it would be perfect. But hopefully the next TikToker will have an idea for that too!

Rice bowl with leftover salmon

Hooray for leftovers, always. A tip if you like things easy: cook generous quantities so you can make a nice lunch the next day. If we all did more with our leftovers, a lot of food waste could be prevented. Sometimes you just need a little inspiration so you don’t eat exactly the same thing again, and TikTok is very useful for that too. For example, if you’ve made that easy salmon from the oven and still have some rice left over, this is an easy and delicious way to use up the leftovers:

Pasta chips

Yes, we told you about deep-fried pasta chips a long time ago, of course. Delicious! But naturally, Airfryer fans wanted to give them an air-fried twist, and tadaa: pasta chips with less fat were born:

Avocado adventures

Preventing half your avocado from turning brown (the half you don’t eat right away) remains a challenge. Coating it with a little lemon juice is of course a well-known attempt to prevent discoloration, and earlier there was also the TikTok tip to place the avocado cut-side down in a container of water. This tip is worth trying too: coat it with olive oil! Double the fat, double the deliciousness?

(Boiled) egg-cellent peeling

You do have to be brave for this trick. The idea is to tap a small crack into the raw egg. They don’t explain how to prevent ending up with cooked white flakes outside your egg, but five million users still thought this way of peeling a boiled egg was a very good idea. What do you think?

In short: besides the nonsense you can find on TikTok, and the potentially harmful diet trends caused by people who aren’t trained in the subject and simply say whatever comes to mind, there is certainly something to be said for all the useful and delicious tips you might otherwise never hear about.
