If you can’t choose between pizza and sushi, you have to try this TikTok combo

We could start every day with a happy dance to celebrate the existence of sushi, and one for pizza. I mean, is there anyone reading this who thinks ‘meh, pizza, well, if I have to’ or ‘ugh, sushi, just give my portion to the cat’?? No, we can’t imagine that either. But sushi pizza, a dish that’s currently trending on TikTok – what IS that?

And more importantly: should we write it off as a disgusting invention before even trying it? The kind where they throw raw fish and wasabi on a pizza because apparently nobody wants to make normal pizzas anymore, or rub tomato sauce and mozzarella onto a nigiri because hey, frankfurter sushi is apparently a thing too?

But luckily, it doesn’t look that gross after all. In fact, this doesn’t look half bad, although we still think pizza should remain pizza and sushi sushi… But for anyone looking for something new or different, this might be inspiration for tonight!

Anyone can do it

At least you don’t have to work with yeast, flour and patience to make a perfect pizza base. Nor do you need the razor-sharp precision and rolling skills of a sushi chef (because let’s be honest, making beautiful sushi is really difficult and not within every hobbyist’s reach). This ‘technique’ is much easier: the idea is to shape cooked sushi rice into a pancake and fry it until crispy in a pan, then top it with a sauce that doesn’t clash with sushi (so no slowly simmered tomato sauce), followed by fish and other sushi-style toppings.

Stick with it

It’s important to use sushi rice for the base rather than regular long-grain rice, because the high starch and moisture content in sushi rice means it’s less likely to fall apart while frying in the pan. Flipping it may take a little practice, but then you’ll have a beautiful golden-brown base that’s crispy on both sides.

Get creative

And which toppings work well here? Spreading it with wasabi aioli is popular, as is topping the ‘pizza’ with raw fish to recreate the sushi experience a little. But canned tuna is also used, as are vegetarian options such as avocado, cucumber and sesame seeds. In short, there are plenty of options if you simply vary things according to what you like! Just look at these creations, which also use ‘regular’ steamed rice instead of fried rice:
