Going from one surprise to another in England; this TikToker experiences it firsthand
We’ll be the first to admit that when you find yourself in a completely different culture, it can take a while to get used to the local customs and practices. Especially when it comes to food and drink! So even if you think, ‘Hey, I’ve really got the hang of eating sushi’ – in Japan, you might still scratch your head when you see how it’s done there. (Tip: read through the sushi etiquette first.) This American TikToker also ended up in a country where a lot of things seemed very strange:
Except… this isn’t about someone who suddenly found themselves somewhere they didn’t speak the language. (Because the voice-over texts are spoken by a female voice, we’ll refer to this person as she and her for convenience, but is this even her own voice..?) This American moved to England, and although that might not seem like a huge culture shock, many things still turn out to be a mystery to her.

And once again, even in a culture that may seem quite similar at first glance, you can come across everyday objects or customs that make no sense to you. The responses to her questions vary enormously: some people are extremely helpful, while others are utterly stunned by how stupid they think the questions are…

Sweet as pie
British desserts, lovely stuff. Except this black pudding: why is it savoury and not sweet? Erm, or is this a joke? Get rid of that whipped cream; what you have on your plate here is blood sausage.
Sweet tooth
Can someone tell me why Fruit Loops cereal is here in the sweets aisle? “Can someone tell me why Americans pour milk over their candy and eat it with a spoon for breakfast?” Padoempatsss!
Mouldy cheese
Is the Parmesan cheese from Selfridges supposed to look like this? I bought it, but now I’m having my doubts..? “Just eat it,” says Perry, “then maybe you’ll stop posting this nonsense.” Ouch.
Cheese conflict
Why is the cheddar here pale yellow and crumbly, unlike normal orange cheddar? “You mean Red Leicester; cheddar is never orange. What Americans call cheese, we don’t recognise as cheese.”
Crack an egg
Can someone please tell me why they keep eggs outside the fridge here, where they can pick up salmonella? Erm, not how that works… eggs don’t get a potential salmonella bacterium from the air in the supermarket.
It’s not entirely clear whether these questions are genuine or whether SWFinds (this user’s TikTok name) is pulling everyone’s leg. What does seem clear at this point, to put it in very British terms: this doesn’t seem to be the sharpest tool in the shed…
