8 delicious dishes for under ten euros in Amsterdam

January is here, which means my bank account has taken quite a hit from all the dinners and gifts. A classic case of ‘having a little month left at the end of my money’… What to do now? Yes, I wondered that too, in a panic, and selected the best restaurants in Amsterdam for a meagre January budget. Cha-ching!

French Breakfast
That good food doesn’t have to be expensive is proven by VESSEL Amsterdam. This new start-up spot in the Houthavens serves a real French Breakfast for less than €10, consisting of fresh orange juice, coffee or tea, a croissant and toast with jam & butter. Sink into the sofa, grab a newspaper and enjoy the beautiful view over the IJ. They work with local suppliers as much as possible: farmers, foodie friends and neighbours, all bon vivants who care just as much about good and delicious food and drinks as we do.

Get juicy with fresh juices
Sydney, Los Angeles and Bali have never felt so close thanks to the unique retail and restaurant concept Deus Ex Machina. A few months ago, Deus also settled along Amsterdam’s canals. With a menu full of smoothie bowls and avocado toast, this is an ideal breakfast spot too. And that’s not all: you can also come here for lunch, dinner, late-night snacks and signature cocktails – and, when the weather is nice, sit outside by the canal.

Duivekater French toast
Early bird, work bird or luxury bird; for everyone whose money flew away a little too quickly last month, Kanarie Club offers a warm nest. With a budget of ten euros, you can get all kinds of delicious things here. Croissants with three types of spreads, duivekater French toast or a toasted sandwich with cheddar, turkey and bell-pepper tapenade. This is a nest I’m happy to get out of bed for.

Israeli sandwich
I like to finish a stroll around the Albert Cuyp Market at Bar Fisk. The menu at this restaurant is based on the flavours of Tel Aviv and consists of delicious sandwiches and snacks that make me happy. Bar Fisk is especially welcoming to vegetarians. My favourite? The typically Israeli Sahib sandwich with aubergine, egg and tahini. Oh, just thinking about it… So delicious!

Colourful bowls and sushirritos
When I’m in the mood for a substantial yet healthy lunch that adds a little colour to a grey day, I go to Poké Perfect. At no fewer than five locations in Amsterdam, you can feast on the cheerful bowls and sushirritos. These dishes cost around €10 – and are worth every extra penny.

Lunch to go
I’m a real sucker for Middle Eastern dishes. I’ve been a fan of NENI at Stadionplein in Amsterdam since it opened. I especially like the Deli; they serve various delicious dishes there for less than ten euros. I regularly pick up a falafel pita, sabich or chicken shawarma. And when I have more time, I have lunch there; the typically Israeli mezze with hummus and sakuska are divine. A lovely January meal!

Good old pizza slice
Nothing can’t beat a good pizza! And the ones from Toni Loco have that little something extra: an insanely delicious crispy sesame crust. Get them at Magna Plaza (upstairs in the Food Department) or at the Albert Cuyp. Are you with a large group? Order a giant pizza to share, with whichever topping you like.

Juicy burger
Every now and then, there’s nothing better than sinking your teeth into a huge burger. It probably isn’t on your list of good intentions, but you’ll still stay just under ten euros with the Prime Aberdeen Angus beef or the Veggie Delight from THE BUTCHER. All the juice, without costing you an arm and a leg!
