A new hummus variety: golden or gross?

We’re actually quite open-minded when it comes to hummus (and we get angry about hummus deception). I sometimes pimp good store-bought hummus in the food processor with a cooked beet (also store-bought) and za’atar, and that seems to impress the guests. At the editorial office, the carrot and chipotle varieties can’t be kept in stock—in short: we’re experimenting merrily. But we think this new discovery will divide hummus lovers into two camps…

The makers of the product that almost unrivalledly divides people into two firmly opposed camps (love vs. hate) have decided that the world is ready for: Marmite hummus! That’s right, the umami spreadable bomb that sets half of humanity gagging opposite the other half licking their lips can now also be found in the famous chickpea spread or dip.
Marmite all over the place
It’s hardly surprising that this was recently launched in England, where they absolutely love Marmite, and it turns out that Marmite has already managed to worm its way into cream cheese, butter and jars of peanut butter there! According to the makers themselves, the cream cheese on your bread is, for example, an ideal stepping stone to the real thing, haha. And Marmite butter will surely work very well in simple spaghetti with breadcrumbs, stirred through the pasta just before sprinkling the deliciously crunchy breadcrumbs over it.

A matter of taste
What do you think? Would you try it? We previously shared the tip of giving your roasted potatoes a boost with Marmite! I have to admit, when I try really hard to imagine the flavour of the hummus (which I actually do all day with all kinds of food), my first association is ‘yes, that could be pretty tasty’, even though I’m not a big Marmite fan. But that salty kick after the hummus’s softness, with a fresh, crunchy piece of raw vegetable… I’m up for that! Of course, that’s also because of the addictive reaction umami triggers—that delicious savoury flavour you taste more or less behind your jaws. Ketchup, Parmesan, fish, soy, seaweed; umami is what makes it special. Sushi? Umami to the max!
So, for anyone still having doubts about Marmite but willing to give it a chance: entry-level versions such as Marmite cream cheese and hummus are of course incredibly easy to make yourself. Stir a spoonful of Marmite through it, mix thoroughly and taste. Good luck!
