Action safety warning: kitchen utensils being removed from stores due to carcinogenic substances
Action has issued an important safety warning about the three-piece plastic Masterchef kitchen utensil set. Tests have shown that it contains excessive levels of carcinogenic substances. Which substances are involved exactly, and what should you do if you have such a set at home?
Action is the ultimate paradise for bargain hunters. The store is packed with fantastic gadgets you can get for next to nothing. My home is half Action museum: I too am a member of the Action fan club. So I also had to double-check whether I happened to have bought this set in recent months. Luckily, I escaped the dance, but be sure to check whether the same applies to you. If the Masterchef kitchen utensil set is in your kitchen, you should return it to Action as soon as possible.
Carcinogenic PAAs
Here’s what’s going on: product tests showed that the kitchen utensil set contains an excessively high level of primary aromatic amines (PAAs). PAAs are substances that arise from polyamide or melamine (plastic). Many PAAs are carcinogenic, and a few are also toxic and can damage the red blood cells in our bodies. Dangerous, then.
Precisely because such substances pose a health risk, European legislation exists governing them. For PAAs, for example, a migration limit of 0.01 milligrams per kilogram applies. The NVWA (Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority) carries out checks on this. This mainly concerns products made of polyamide or melamine plastic that come from China and Hong Kong: they regularly fail to comply with this European legislation. This was also revealed by tests carried out on the three-piece plastic Masterchef kitchen utensil set.
Purchase price refunded
Action has decided to remove the kitchen utensil set from its stores. In addition, it is asking customers who bought the kitchen set to return it to the store. Please note: this concerns a specific batch number. So not every set will contain excessive levels of PAAs. The product in question is:

Do you have the set at home? You can return it to any Action store. No need to panic about the receipt: even if it has long since ended up in the recycling bin, you can still return the set to the store. You will receive a refund of the purchase price in any case.
