Albert Heijn: revolution in the banana aisle!

gele en groene bananen

You know the feeling: you buy a bunch of bananas and a few days later they’re all brown. You can make delicious banana bread with them, or banana pancakes. But if you simply wanted a perfectly ripe banana in your yogurt, that can be—depending on your mood—pretty irritating. Chiquita now has a solution. In collaboration with Albert Heijn, they are launching the Chiquita green 5-pack: bananas you buy while they’re still green, so you can let them ripen at home at your own pace. No rush, no waste, just bananas on your schedule.

Ripe for now or later: you choose

Chiquita is introducing not one, but two varieties: the Chiquita yellow 5-pack—slightly riper, ready to eat—and the brand-new Chiquita green 5-pack. Both are available from today in all 850 Albert Heijn stores. The green variety is perfect for anyone who likes to plan a little further ahead or simply doesn’t feel like having banana soufflé on day two.

Peter Bolijn of Chiquita is hugely enthusiastic: “We’re leaving behind an era in which bananas always looked the same. This is a major upgrade for the banana aisle.”

Banana frustration is a thing of the past

According to research, 88% of banana shoppers plan their purchase before even entering the supermarket. And their biggest frustrations? Overripe bananas and… well, waste. With this new 5-pack, your banana stays fresh for up to three days longer. So: buy today, eat on Saturday. Handy.

Speaking of handy… we previously shared a smart hack with you for keeping bananas fresh for longer. We even tested 7 ways to store bananas. So you can use those tips too if you don’t have a green bunch on hand.

Fewer trips to the supermarket, less waste

This is especially handy for big banana consumers. Combine a yellow 5-pack with a green 5-pack, and you’ll be set for the whole week. No more banana races against the clock. And another nice benefit: by buying bananas you don’t have to eat right away, you throw less away. By the way, did you know that you can eat green bananas too? This is very common in the Caribbean. For example, you can slice them and add them to your salad.
